Donnie you're out of your element.

You're telling me one of the greatest drivers in the game's history shot more free throws than a guy who spends 90% of his time outside the three point arc? By jove, you've cracked the code! Someone get this guy to the Sloan Conference.

I'd say you're dumber than a bag of rocks, but I wouldn't want to insult rocks.

As general food for thought for this thread: curry and Thompson struggle against physical defense. That ‘15 team could’ve lost to Memphis (I’ll go ahead and say would’ve) if Mike Conley doesn’t break his face in a freak accident. Tony Allen and the physical play of Memphis wore them out. Klay Was so rattled he was pump faking and jumping away from invisible defenders. Was Rodman better than Tony Allen?

The Bullets, Cavs, Celtics, Bulls, and Pistons are all irrelevant to GS making it out of the first round cause they're in the East.

You can't say stuff like this. The downvote patrol will be here shortly to set you straight. You're correct, though.

By God I reckon Dell Curry is so good, he gets stats for shots that didn't even exist.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/dell-curry-1.html

as someone who watched the metro conference with a passion that year, this is a crazy walk down memory lane. hated to see dell curry play because he was a deadly shooter. I do not recall any 3-point line in use, however, it appears that the 3-point stats fell out of the team stats on that site. I've dug more, and still cannot find the use in 84-85, however, I have to think it's an early season - possibly even pre-season usage. VaTech that year was one and done in their conference tournament and one and done in the NCAA tournament (that game in particular I can get the stats on, and they don't reflect usage of the 3-point line -- and wouldn't have been since the remainder of the tournament was no 3s).

did you watch curry play at va tech?

Rodman was a 4, TA was a 2/3 right? TA was a nasty defender, Rodman had the edge in rebounding of course.

I did. My grandfather had Memphis State season tickets back then. Dell Curry was an assassin. I remember one year - I think it was 84-85, when Memphis State got the number one ranking, and then Virginia Tech beat them the next game and knocked them out of the spot.

And no....there was definitely no three point line. That didn't keep Curry from raining in 30 footers though. VT couldn't match Memphis State's size, but Memphis State didn't have anyone who could guard Dell Curry, either.

Tony was a small forward. Of course calling him anything other than “defense” or “please don’t shoot” would be incorrect. I was just pointing out that GS has not handled physical defense very well, thus they would’ve struggled in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

They would get killed in the paint. I don’t buy not getting out of the first round though. Those were some of the best shooting teams in NBA history.

I would just love to see some modern teams against the late 80’s and early 90’s Pistons. With late 80’s and early 90’s referees.

To me, no teams fair well against great physical defenses. What you’re saying is true. But that’s the case for any team imo.

Were they hanging off Dell's arms when he shot free throws, too?

Might as well have been. There's a big difference between shooting free throws after having to exert max energy just to get open and then having to defend the other team's shooting guard on the other end versus shooting free throws after hanging out behind the three point line and not getting back on defense.

Teams in the late 80’s averaged just as many points and defenders were able to do about anything except use a gun and only got called for a regular personal foul at most. I love watching Steph and Klay, but I don’t think they would’ve been stars back then.

Steph is a shooter. One of the best I’ve seen. He’d have been fine, but he should thank those defenses of old every day for the physicality they brought that he’s never played against. It forced rule changes that changed the style of play to redistributing a lot of the scoring load to outside shooters.

So every team in the 80s were dominant defenses? You think they were playing great defense while scoring in the 110s a game? Those two can’t exist simultaneously.

Teams beat the hell out of each other and still scored over 110. Steph and Klay wouldn’t be able to score like they do know had they played against the old teams. Tony Allen is a throwback to old school defenders and he terrorized them. Watch the 30 for 30 about the 1986 NBA finals. Those entire teams would’ve been suspended for a month for what they were doing to each other. The last time Lebron won, Dramond got suspended for two games (I think?) for pushing lebron’s leg. Kevin McHale tried to decapitate Kurt Rambis and got a personal foul. The announcers didn’t even call for anything more. That was how they played.

I’m very aware of how the played. But to speak in absolute terms regarding two of the best shooters in history wouldn’t have similar success in different eras is wrong imo.

Tony Allen isn’t a throwback either, he was a great defender. There will be many more like him, Leonard is one off the top of my head currently. Klay and Steph hit many of there shots moving off the ball and coming off screens, that’s successful in any era. Or else players like Reggie Miller would not have been the stars they were.

Hand checking is meant to stall someone driving to the basket and it's effective inside the 3 point line. It doesn't do **** to spot up 3 point shooters or 3 point shooters on the fast break. Y'all act like the Warriors and their vastly superior roster after Jordan don't get to also use the 80's foul rules here. Warriors defense is going to tremendously improve now that they are allowed to manslaughter the Bulls. Go ahead and start comparing rosters Bulls vs Warriors. You're gonna start doubting yourself real soon once you get past Jordan on the list.

I’m just now watching last nights episodes. What’s insane isn’t the lack of foul calls, they weren’t even looking for foul calls. 3 hours in and I don’t know that I’ve saw a referee.

We are comparing players to others that played before they were born. The whole thing is hypothetical. Nothing in this whole thread is an absolute, except the bit about Isiah Thomas. I simply pointed out that these two struggled against a team and a particular player that played defense as close to the late 80’s as the modern game/refs would allow (What I meant by throwback). That’s the closest I can get to actually seeing how those two would fair against a defense from the late 80’s. Show me another example where they played against a bully/team of bullies and overcame? I can also point out where they got beat by a top 5 all-time player**, whimped out, called their buddy who was better than them to come deal with said bully. That also wouldn’t have worked in the 80’s. That ***** move would’ve been called out by every player they faced.

To be fair, KD came calling to them.
