I believe the example nickname in the op was never actually a nickname but rather a foolish insult.

The first few weeks of the 15 season my wife & kids called TU, "Tyler Use-less".
By the time we saw him in person at USC 2 months later, he was my wife's favorite player.

(In the pic often used of Tyler leaving the court giving high-5's to the fans, the arm to right he is about to give 5 to is my son's at this past year's USC game).

Back in the heady mid-'80s, my 9-11 year old self was at a game in Rupp one midwinter's weeknight. I idled away the pre-game minutes reading the game program (no real pre-game entertainment back then unless you count the cheerleaders, Wildcat or 'Big Blue' ambling around the court on his stilts) and on this particular night had the insight to create some personalized nicknames for the guys.

Imagine my mother's and older brother's surprise/horror when I greeted James Blackmon's starting-lineup introduction with a full-throated and totally heartfelt 'GO BLACKIE!!!!!'

Calling BCG "coach"

Not quite the worst nickname: a friend of mine once called BCG "the mad scientist." It was so appropriate to me - he was insane and his line up attempts, and substitutions were so bizarre.
I still call BCG that: "the Mad Scientist"

problem is, people want a nickname so they think about it. You never get a good nickname if you have to think
I agree that they force it but then that's why we get some poor names , no big deal . The one thing that is just so sad is a team name with unwhatevergoeshereables .

Camaro. As in Jules Camaro, courtesy of Ralph Hacker because he was too incompetent to memorize 3 frickin' syllables. Used to drive me insane. Considering that Camara was around the program for 5 years, I found it not only incompetent, but disrespectful ("I can't be bothered to get your weird African name right").

What about a whole team? Pitino's Bambinos? Anything with Rick's name attached has got to be the worst.
