Summer boredom.....

Will you bend over to pick up a penny? If not, what is the denomination of coinage that justifies the effort? If not a coin, how about a $1 bill? A brand new Bitcoin??!!***

Ok…really thought from the caption that this thread was heading a totally different direction….

Anyway I’m here already, so I guess I’ll go with a $1 bill if there is a nearby place to spend it quickly. Otherwise its going in a tip jar or something.

Yes.

My grandmother grew up dirt poor and often went to bed hungry. As a kid I was taught to pick up pennies so as not to take money for granted and still do it out of respect of where I came from.

On a similar note. About once a year, maybe 2 years, I'll go pickup some coin rolls and sort and roll coins from my change jar before depositing them into my kids bank accounts. I know they have machines for this but to me its akin to sitting down and working a puzzle, I just enjoy doing it. It also helps remind me of those times where every coin mattered.

I heard it said several years ago that if Bill Gates took a second to stop and pick up a $100 bill then he was losing money. I guess factored out Gate’s time was worth more than a Benjamin a second.

Pennies are the housefly of currency. Just flat out annoying and dirty.
They needed to be eliminated years ago.

I'll pick up a dime if I dropped it. I'll pick up a quarter if i see one and it's convenient.

Maybe not every single time . . . but, generally, I pick up all coins (even pennies) whenever I see them.

It seems wasteful not to pick it up. Also, it's sorta like picking up litter, which is good.

Years ago, I got onto my bus at the Pentagon headed to work early one morning. I sat down and right beside me on the seat was a $20 bill.

I looked up to see whether anyone was looking for it, but nobody was. That was the best "treasure" I've ever stumbled upon.

He should be more worried about what he's losing in this divorce rather than worried about picking up a $100 bill.

Me, I'll pick up a penny and every time I do I think about this old man that walked all over town when I was growing up. He was disabled because he had been burned pretty severely most all over his body and it didn't matter how hot it was he wore an old trench coat and an old mans felt type fedora hat because of the sun burning his sensitive skin. Everybody called him the "Penny Man" because he walked EVERYWHERE all day w/ his head pointed down at the sidewalk looking for change. He had a regular route he took that included the drive through windows of all of the branch banks where he reportedly picked up the most change which was dropped by customers in the drive through's but they didn't want to get out to pick them up. I don't know if anybody even knew his name, he never talked or spoke to anybody, just walked around town every day looking down at the sidewalks.

Years ago when we had the corporate big wigs touring our factory, had a co-worker who glued nickels and dimes on the sidewalk to see who would try and pick them up.

Don't know what that proved, but was kinda funny watching these guys making high-6 or 7 figure salaries get frustrated over a dime glued to the ground.

I'll pick up any coinage I find. Also, on a tangent, I found $20 floating in the ocean at Orange Beach a few years ago. Can't remember if it was my birthday or Father's Day (only a few days apart every year), but it made my day.

I think it is unlucky not to bend over and pick it. You never know it might be a 1943 copper penny.

What is special about a 1943 penny? Is it valuable? Just asking because I inherited an old coin collection from my father which I have never had appraised but I think it could be worth quite a bit.

Since I avoid accepting them in change and when I do I usually throw on the ground I'm darn sure not going to pick one up. A nickel, prolly not. Dime or quarter yes.

Pennies should be obsoleted.

It's all about value. According to sources, a penny in 1920 had the buying power of about 14 cents today. Based on what my dad told me he was able to buy with a penny in the 30s I think that valuation is probably low. Thus it made more sense back then to value pennies. Now not so much.

Human nature has not really changed. They also had things in abundance back then that are not so abundant today and the same philosophy is true in reverse.

Where'd you get that ? I live with the same damn superstition and never knew why.

My grand parents live through the Great Depression. They were also born in the late stage of reconstruction. They are the one who told me about the superstition.

I'd probably pick up a quarter, although I can't tell you the last time I used one.

I would pick up $1 for sure.

I use Apple Pay and my credit card for every transaction I can.

I pick every coin I see on the ground. Let me tell ya'll how little people value coins and even at times bills. I manage a car wash. One of the guys that helped set up the car wash was an Alabama fan and he told me he got the coins out of the vacuums every day and it paid for 4 Iron Bowl tickets every year. The first couple weeks I didn't fool with the vacuums but then I started thinking "Iron Bowl tickets can't be very cheap!" so I started collecting the change every day. In 2020 I collected $2344.99 form the vacuums! Every penny helps!

I grew up in the 80's, not the 20's. And my point was not about how many 1/14's of worth one decade's penny is of another. Nobody picks up pennies for buying power.

A couple years ago I walked into a gas station after work and saw a bum that always begs outside. He didn’t ask me for anything when I went in but I knew he would on the way out. For whatever reason during that day I knew I had 4 pennies in my pocket. When I came out he of course he asked, I said man I have 4 pennies and took them out to give them to him. He said no I’m good. Anytime I see that guy begging (he’s perfectly healthy, rides bikes everywhere, probably in his 30’s), I always tell people don’t give that guy anything.

Only if it’s heads up. Something about good luck.

No luck yet. But when “they” say it’s good luck, I’m going with “they”.

Absolutely. Kind of related to a major pet peeve of mine of where I work. I'm involved with the sales / pricing side of things. We sell tens of thousands of items. I think our minimum order requirement is around $200. Why in the hell do we have list prices with cents? Can't everything be rounded to the nearest dollar? Would make everyone's life easier.

You wouldn't believe how much time is wasted because we quote something for $5402.35 and the purchase order comes in for $5402.00. For some reason the customer didn't bother putting in the cents, but we can't accept that because the documents don't match. So there's a day or so wasted and we look like idiots trying to correct a 35 cent mistake. I make sure any quotes that come out of my department have .00 cents.

You can probably extend that to anybody begging, at least in any area big enough to have non-profits to work with homeless. They will usually at least try to make sure they get medicine if need it and try to get off any substances they are abusing. Or if they don't have those problems, they will try to connect them with other services that can help with things like job interviews and transportation. So you can probably do more good by giving to them. Might not be true in bigger cities with really large homeless populations, but I'm guessing that's true for a lot of the places people on this board live.
