Wildcats move on to States

The Great Bridge Wildcats earned the right to play for their 2nd State championship in the past three years after defeating the Granby Comets 11-5 in the Eastern Region semi-finals.

Great Bridge benefited from two Granby errors to score their first run. With two outs, junior Charlie Cody reached on an error to second and scored on an error after a grounder to third by Taylor Lane.

After two runs by Granby in the bottom half of the 1st inning, Comet pitcher Matt Eagle walked the first two batters in the second. A single by Dane Smith plated Logan Harrelson tying the game at two. Catcher Chase Hinkle followed with a sacrifice fly to score Colby Higgerson and Charlie Cody finished the scoring with a single for a 4-2 Wildcats lead.

The Comets fifth error produced another run in the top of the fifth. Hinkle walked to start the inning and a lazy fly ball to centerfield by Matthews was dropped allowing the baserunner to score for a 5-2 lead.

Great Bridge broke the game open with six more runs in their final two at-bats. A 3-run triple by Matthews extended the Great Bridge lead to 9-2 and two more errors in the top of the seventh resulted in two more runs.

Junior Logan Harrelson was the winner allowing two 1st inning runs before running into trouble in the sixth. Two walks and a single to start the inning sent Harrelson to the dugout giving way to sophomore Chris Matthews who promptly walked the Dimitri Rivera with the bases loaded cutting the lead to 9-3. Granby added two more runs on a on two fielders choice to pull to within four. Charlie Cody pitched a perfect 7th inning to end the game.

The Wildcats will face the winner of Woodside-Kellam semifinal game for the Eastern Region championship.
