Why can't we adjust our patterns on 3rd and 4th down?

This is absolutely mind boggling to me. I can't tell you how many times I've watched us run patterns shy of the sticks on 3rd and 4th down in the Croom era. We did it at least twice Saturday. We complete both passes, but failed to get the first down simply because our WRs didn't adjust their patterns by one or two yards. Is it really that hard to tell the guys on 3rd and 7 to run 7 and out rather than the usual 5 and out? It just aggravates me to see our WRs catch a pass on an out pattern and run out of bounds a yard or two short.

Against UK when we went for it at midfield on 4th and 7 we ran a pattern that, even if completed, would have left us short of the first down. Why?
