Why a 3rd QB offer

If we anticipate having Thompson and Purdue, why offer the Iowa Western QB? Do we anticipate more turnover in the QB room?

I believe Iowa state recently offered

hard to know how serious an offer is

he was the national offensive player of the year last year and he plays in our backyard
hard not to offer

if he blows up at another power 5 school - our staff can easily say we offered and wanted him badly but with the addition of Thompson he decided to go elsewhere

the offer at minimum gives them cover should Glantz turn out to be a prolific D1 QB

smart PR move

To me, I think it signals that Purdy situation has changed. With CT being N and OU offering Purdy, that he has other options. IMO, he's not coming to Nebraska anymore.

It’s a risk free offer. It’s a walk on spot. Most recruits won’t be Intimidated by a team adding a walk on at their position and if by some chance the kid turns out to be a better option than a scholarship kid you didn’t have to risk that initial scholarship to get him.

Let’s wait and see if Purdy visits next weekend.. It’s premature to say he isn’t coming here anymore when Whipple been recruiting him all this time even at Pitt..

Think the offer was given for a number of reasons.

1. If something changes and Purdee goes somewhere else we at least have an offer out there.
2. PR - looks good to at least offer the preferred walk-on.
3. If Purdee does come here and we lose either Smothers or Haarberg (Smothers would be my guess) if one were to leave then it adds the needed depth back to the QB room.
4. Puts some pressure on Purdee to sign next weekend albeit not a lot.

Hope not. Smothers is a baller
The skill sets of Smothers vs all the other QBs are discordant

i think his future at Nebraska is as a change of pace guy for a play/series or 2 a game at QB or as an athlete at another position -

i think if he is ever going to be an every down QB it will be due to an injury at NU or at another school

I think the kid should go where he has a chance to start in '22 or '23. He has a P5 arm and shouldn't waste it sitting the bench.

Glantz (Iowa Western CC) qb signed with Iowa State. We had, apparently, given him a preferred walk-on offer.

When he got the preferred walk-on offer, he was quoted as saying something to the effect of more ammo for his work ethic to prove everyone wrong. I figured we wouldn't be getting him after he said that.

I think Frost should have been all over this guy early.. but Frost gonna Frost.

The QB position basically is now a tryout situation with the current transfer portal rules in place. The goal is to get enough candidates on the roster to find the best one and the others that don't rise to the top will transfer out so any scholarship problem solves itself. That's true of most positions but none more so than at QB. The first stringer at that position monopolizes the playing time and the ego of the also rans won't let them be content to ride the bench very long.

I prefer to keep our QB as is for right now. I would love to see Whipple use Smothers and Thompson this year and Smothers could be used in running situations or as a receiver which I feel would be his best opportunity going forward. I just don't see Purdy as the answer for Nebraska.

What makes you think Smothers can play WR?

I would trust Whipple on this. If he thinks Purdy is a good quarterback for his offense, I hope we get him.

What makes you think he can't? One way to find out will be this spring if Whipple wants to give it a try.
Um, you said to put him there so I assume you know he can do it. Apparently not, you put the onus back on me, how quaint. But I guess you cover your bases by putting this back on Whipple to try.

Certainly if Smothers doesn't win the job, his skills are in line with a Wildcat/change of pace QB. Would think the kid would be at the top of list of guys who occupy that position in terms of throwing the ball.

I doubt that Smothers would stay if his role was just a change of pace quarterback.

If he turns out to be the #2 guy and it is agreed that he be ready to execute the run plays in the playbook, he may stay with the promise of some field action. If Purdy comes and Smothers grades behind him, he probably bolts for a lower level FB team.
