I’m not ready to be too harsh on him. He inherited two average players. He felt he had to get some older guys in right away so the team hasn’t had a chance at continuity. I do blame the refs for this loss. They call a fair game, we win, and this thread doesn’t exist. No question.
lol... first it is definitely not coaching.
First Half = 5 Fouls (Look smooth with a 14pt lead and no whistles)
Second Half = 12 Fouls in the first 12 minutes (15 free throws, prior to end game fouls)
There were legit fouls we made, but it never helps when refs are giving them free points. Thor going for the loose ball, and Walkers fourth foul that almost made Hoiberg faint. That is 3 points, and those 3 points are what put us in needing to foul at the end.
So you see, yes we can't give up a 14 point lead. You also can't not see the foul discrepancy 1st half to the 2nd.
None of which mean Hoiberg's not a good coach, and you are dumb as a rock if you believe that!
I agree. Blanton went on a run of three straight drives to the basket and three buckets and then we settle for threes? Thor drove but didn't finish. We were just not good with the bunnies all season.
Would help if we had someone 6-10 or 6-11 that isn’t 215 pounds.. We need a big man like some of these other B1G 10 teams have to help Walker out he’s doing the best he possibly can down low..
A few years ago, some college basketball coaching guru introduced the notion of taking a player out of the game ahead of a media timeout, so he can get that all-important "extra rest." Last night that moment came just as Banton was on a scoring run.
I don't understand yanking a player who's on an offensive roll, media timeout be damned. But somehow this strategy has made its way into The Big Book of College Basketball Coaching, and it MUST be followed to the letter.
You see that a lot in highschool too. Will bring their big man out with like a minute to go before end of 1srt and 3rd qtr if there's a dead ball. I get it if they need a blow or if starting to get into foul trouble. But to me, if they're on a roll keep riding that pony. If they need a blow hold out the first minute of the next qtr. This allows you to sub during the timeout and game plan for new player and hope opposing team wasn't paying attention
Yeah I don't get it, especially in a game like last night when it's win-or-go-home. I guess the good news is, Banton can get plenty of rest now.
They showed a graphic last night that in the last 30 days, only 8 NBA teams had more games than we did. Just saw on twitter that due to the COVID break and lack of time between games, we had 40 less practices than last year. Combined with a brutal schedule in the nations toughest conference, I'm giving Fred and the kids a break. They played their butts off.

Nebraska is the only BB program whose winning percentage did not improve as a result of the new hire
in every case but 2, both seasons winning percentage were better than the season before the new hire

I don't get the math you have for Bama but they made a great hire.
I wonder if Oats will be Wisconsin's HC in the future. Gard might be what Bruce Weber was to Illinois.

Alabama new hire 1st season = .516
Alabama new hire 2nd season = .778
exlcuding Neb - alabama was the only school that fired their coach and the new hire had a brief dip in winning percentage the first year although .516 is respectable - nothing like .219
You're apparently not paying attention to the TV talking heads. Wisconsin is having a really outstanding season, they just haven't beaten any good teams (Loyola-Chicago being their signature win) because of an unprecedented run of flukishly bad luck and refs having it in for Brad Davison.
Blaming the refs is one of the unfortunate realities of sports fandom. Go read a game thread from any team that lost a game. You won't find one that doesn't have someone complaining about the refs. You likely won't find one that doesn't have someone complaining about the refs from the winning team, either. Calling out fans that complain about refs is lazy and makes you look rather desperate to score some kind of lame 'win' against said complainers.
That said, Nebraska was an absolutely horrific basketball team this season. The were better than last year though - which is clearing a rather low hurdle. If you watched the 2nd half last night, you watched pretty much every NU game this season. The exception was that NU played really good basketball for the first 20 minutes. They didn't play good basketball for long stretches almost all season. The Rutgers game was an exception.
Nearly every game featured ridiculously long stretches where the opponent absolutely abused NU. Many basketball games will see one team or the other go on stretches of a few minutes where they outscore the opponent for 6, 8, or maybe 10 points. But NU games consistently featured stretches of 6, 8, 10, 12 minutes or more where the opponent outscored them by embarrassing margins. Not only does the score get out of hand, but those stretches use up big chunks of game-time.
NU needs better players. An abundance of them. They need players where you can count on a certain level of production every night...positive production. I don't mean counting on excessive fouls, turnovers, missed free throws, missed layups, etc. NU had very little reliable, positive, production from anyone.

Probably the most important factor next year will be Bryce McGowens playing up to his 5 star rating. Having at least 1 player who can score where the opponent has to account for someone and do more than play straight-up defense will make the rest of the team better. There will be slightly more space and driving lanes and shots won't be quite as contested.
Last night might be one of 2 games all season where I would give NU a win if officiated fairly. It was so obvious and such a close game. I don’t think many are blaming the refs for the entire season. It’s just as obvious that we’re usually just bad.
I really do not buy into the “all those makeup games wore us down” narrative, the talking heads have been nice to us with that excuse. This team showed no effects from playing a bunch of games in a row. They played better the second half of the season hands down. They hustled just as hard, made more shots, better passes. There’s just nothing there to support the fatigue narrative.

You guys who watched that team all year and supported em so much....are awesome. I tuned in a few times and thought checking the air pressure in my tires was a better use of my time. Hats off to all of you!!
