Watching the documentary on BTN last night got me thinking. Some forty years later we need history to repeat itself. Getting a Phil Sellers type player is just the jolt this program needs to get things jump started. Can Karl Hobbs or Brandin Knight play the role of Dick Vitale and go out there and get it done?

Agree.

We need a Dickie V clone to sell a 5 star NYC / or NJ recruit on Rutgers.

Here he'll be the new messiah for this generation...just as having Sellers helped land Dabney, Copeland, Bailey, Jordan and Anderson and then Rutgers made a run.

Join Rutgers and become a legend for the rest of your life.

Answer to your question is not anytime soon. Today's HS superstar is a one and done - and those guys aren't coming to RU.

RU's renaissance will have to come through a cadre of solid 3-4 star types, four year guys, playing as a team.

True in today's game. The real 5 star guys probably gone within 2 years if year one doesn't go quite so well. Although we would gladly take that guy, it wouldn't build a foundation for the future and one player wouldn't make us any kind of threat.
We need a nice mix of good basketball players that know how to play and can also shoot. That hasn't happened in quite a while so we're overdue. We have the staff so start adding the players. Need some guys to transfer to open space otherwise it won't change that fast.
Meanwhile, showing progress is paramount for the program.

Sellers left 40 years ago .Its been a long wait and many coaches and players have come and gone. The on going problem of lack of shooters still is front and center and the results on the score board are entirely predictable.

^ D.Jones was a huge get, but we still missed out on 2 of the top 3 college bound (ignore Al Harrington) NJ players that year. Jay Williams in 1999 would have been the program changer, ala Phil Sellers. In 1999 Todd B was a good player for us his two years and we probably dont' get him if Jay came on board, BUT Jay was a difference maker. DJ would't have transfered unless Bannon still imploded from the FT incident (although all things forgiven when winning), 2000-2002 would have been high flying times.

Speaking of shooters, none better than Douby. But I'd take a Jerome Coleman, Ricky Shields, Steve Worthy, Donnell Lumpkin, Eli Carter, Herve Lamazana, Keith Hughes, Rosario, and going way back, Eric Riggins, Clarence Tillman, Steve Kaplan, and of course Jack "The shot" Penhall.

Hard pass on Eli and Rosario. No thank you.
