When is the Mississippi lockdown coming?

The governor will speak tomorrow per his Twitter. Dont know if he will ever shut it down though. That will probably be left to the locals. Oxford, Tupelo, and Columbus have issued at least the recommendation of staying at home. In Oxford it is an order enforceable by a misdemeanor. I havent seen anything about Starkville but I assume it is coming.

Southaven and Olive Branch both issued civil emergencies backed by misdemeanor charges for not complying.

It should happen tomorrow

And it should have happened last week when the major cities started. It was reasonably where it was always headed and we lose significant ground each day we do not do it. Therefore, announce it tomorrow.

I could see a temporary shutdown of non essential business. Outside of a few bigger cities, an actual lockdown seems unlikely. This is one situation where our smaller, largely decentralized population of this state likely is a benefit. Hopefully, spread will be slow enough that once wide scale rapid testing is available everywhere, we can focus on identifying, tracing, and quarantining specific cases and exposure risks rather than a general quarantine. We just need to buy time till we get that capacity.

I fear for New York. Those high real estate prices have resulted in a tightly packed population in limited living spaces almost like a giant cruise ship. They can build temporary hospital spaces, but nobody is going to be able to ship in 40,000 healthcare professionals almost overnight like authoritarian China could for Wuhan either.

I don’t know, I don’t think he will until the count gets to 1000 cases. I personally am in favor of telling everyone in the U.S. to shut down- even grocery stores. ALL STORES. People have had WEEKS to stock food. Let’s Ride 14 days with what we have and bring in the national guard To guard the stores. Hell, I could go a month with the food I have stocked. Ever watched ‘naked and afraid’? It’s still much better than that.

It is also those sparsely populated areas of the state where people are not taking this seriously. I know there was a funeral in my hometown of ~2,000 people this weekend that went forward normally. Lots of people attended. Those areas also often lack adequate medical under normal circumstances. I really don't know how much better they'll fair.

Not all of us freaked out and went into panic buying mode!

Just because you did, are all of us who didn't supposed to 17'off? If so, then I fear for the next national emergency because it will be thunder dome rules.

Well, I’ve always been one to rip the band aid off instead but maybe we could innact a limited amount of people in stores at one time. My take is, in the near future, nearly the only place this could be getting spread is while at the store.. . BTW- I have NOT bought gallons and gallons of water or tons of toilet paper.

You can't shut people off from food supplies. Don't be foolish

My guess is Tuesday, but does anyone have insider info?

I don't know that we need a statewide lockdown. There have been restrictive orders issued at the local level, and that's probably sufficient for us at this time. This isn't New York where 8 million people live on top of each other.

I went out for essentials over the weekend and was surprised at how seriously most are taking this. The Wal Marts and Krogers are crowded but beyond that, the streets are pretty much deserted and people are staying at home.

This is the worst idea yet. Lock people up and cut off their access to food. What could go wrong? **

The traffic in front of our shop is like the old days before the casinos.

Off topic, but I know casino traffic has steadily declined but you probably have unique perspective. How bad has it gotten down there (before the shutdown, of course)?

Ocean Springs has limited all restaurants to take-out/curbside only. City parks are closed. A lot of businesses have shut down or closed to the public - even my bank is drive through or inside by appointment only.

Downtown is usually slammed on the weekends with people eating/drinking or at the farmers market. Wife and I took a walk Saturday and besides a few others doing the same or families bike riding, it was empty. Crazy to see.

Are you insane? People go absolutely crazy when they are starving. More people would get murdered for a box of cereal than this virus will kill.

It is already getting to the point that the decision will have to be made whether to let this virus run its course or go through another Great Depression.

And that's exactly what it's going to take to stop this thing.

Are you joking? I define a hoarder as someone who goes to Sam’s Club and buys bulk- cases of vegetables and bottled water etc. and puts them in their basement for 8-12 week use.
See my post above, I have NOT purchased tons of toilet paper or even so much as a case of bottled water. When they say limit 2 loaves, I’ve purchased 1! I haven’t been to Sams but I have slowly been able to get a few things here and there over the past 2 weeks at the grocery store. So things just aren’t always what they seem- like I said before you lose it on me, I suggested maybe allowing less people in the store at one time.
But IMO, the grocery stores are Most likely where most transmissions are occurring now.

But YOU said you could go on for a month or two with the food you've stocked, but now in this post you say you've limited yourself. You're either a liar or a hoarder. Which is it?

The fastest way to only having Kroger, Walmart, and Amazon is to shut down grocery stores for two weeks. There are thousands of small grocery chains of 2 to 50 stores and very few if any would survive a two week shutdown. They would all file bankruptcy. Then their creditors would have financial troubles, and the dominoes would start tumbling.

Yeah that would be brilliant, put it off till it’s “reeeaal bad”.
Your governor looks like a mouth breathing, do nothing, idiot. Won’t even close the beaches?
And did I hear Matt Wyatt say there was some big shindig at the furniture mart this weekend? Crazy.

Most cities are handing it and that's how it should be. Most states aren't locked down. It's not just MS. Going to the MS beaches will kill you on a good day.

\Posts like this is why we will either kill millions or cripple the economy.

We SHOULD be halfway through this right now....

If EVERYONE went on lockdown for 2 weeks, we could know who has it and just treat them.

By a bunch of people congregating, we have no idea how many cases are out there and have to extend the business shutdown longer....

Maybe you freaked out an stocked up; I didn't. I've been buying my normal weekly amounts of stuff. Close the grocery stores? At that point you've just decided that starving people to death for sure is better than them maybe getting a virus and then maybe getting it severe enough to die from it. That's just stupid.

At that point you've shut off their livelihood and access to food. I'll take my chances with the virus over that.

Pence told him not to apparently. He wagged his tail and was a good puppy. Can we borrow Haley Barbour from wherever he is and let Tate sit this one out?

If what you want to have happen happens, please don't let anyone trace your IP address to your house. It could get ugly. Hopefully not.

Can't tell who you are replying to but surely you aren't calling somebody else an idiot for not closing down Mississippi beaches.

There is rarely, if ever a time where you can't go to a Mississippi beach and easily stay well away from other people.
