Ole Bye is gonna be a tough one 😂. I like Mounties picks. Looks about right. Should be a fun year. On a serious note. Why did Turbyfill not have surgery to fix the hernia? He would have been good for conference. Too big a risk if you ask me. That’s if that nasty little rumor is true

Man it must be tough to have a bye week, week 1. I know the kids are ready to play. But on a bright note it gives the new staff extra time to get things installed.

Not sure what the deal was/is with Turbyfill. They must fill he is ready and healthy though.

Go Mountaineers

I just think if it is a sports hernia that it will hold back your offense and maybe him as a individual. As he goes, goes Mitchell. I think you have a shot at state with a healthy Turbyfill. I just think I would have had surgery preseason and by conference he would not be held back in his head or on the field. I hope he is healthy and it’s truly not a concern. I hate what ifs. I wanna beat y’all but I would rather it be at 100%. I’m not saying we will beat you but as a fan I don’t want to lose a game

Im going bold opening week, and say that Avery and Madison get off on the right foot.

Madison showed flashes of potential last season, and return quite a few on both sides of the ball. They will be young on the line however, so there will be a learning curve.

Avery too, will have some growing pains, after abandoning the spread the last 4 seasons, New coach Ethan Farmer will be lining up in a modified Wing-T from what I'm told. Much better suited for the athletes they have.

Draughn returns almost everybody, and looks to be a solid 2nd place team. They could even challenge Mitchell for top spot. Vs TJ is an interesting matchup. While I think Draughn will have the better players, Coach Cash will pull out all the stops.

Mitchell, having returned near everybody from a state championship appearance, looks to be the clear front-runner, not only in conference, but the west 1a.

Heritage did not look good in their scrimmage, and they are very young this year. Lots of growing pains on the line should be expected, but with good qb play, they could make a rumble later in the season.

Rosman will likely dwell in the basement again this year.

Owen should be improved over the last couple seasons, but a new coach and new faces, who knows? I see them and Madison fighting for 4th place at years end.

Avery 20

Draughn 35

I think a mix of Mitchell Draughn and Owen. I think Heritage will be 4 then Madison then Avery then Rosman.

I truly believe Owen will surprise. I originally thought Heritage would be at the top somewhere but I’ve heard they don’t look real good right now. I do think they will get better. I originally thought Draughn graduated their rb then realized he is just a junior and back. He rushed for almost 2000 yards last year. We all know what Mitchell has.

Draughn should be clear 2nd place, but I think Heritage will improve as the season goes on and finish 3rd at worst. Owen is still a year or 2 away.

I know Owen has 5 senior linemen who are starting. Several of which haven’t played the last couple years due to various reasons. I know we are bigger up front than we have been for a while. I know that we have one of the top 3 players in the WHC that is back in the fold after taking a year off. I know we have added 5 transfers. Many of which will contribute right away. I know we have kids that have worked hard gotten stronger and have bought into a new scheme and a new coach. I see and hear things from these kids that I can’t say I have seen and heard for a good 5-6 years. I hear Heritage is really young and trying to run a new offense and just plain struggling. So I’m really trying to wrap my head around it. We also added a few coaches that had left under our past administration(principal) that are back. Very good coaches plus added a former Owen stand out and Clemson-App State player as a coach. It’s pretty great to see right now

I know we have 29 kids that will dress on Friday nights and I know all their specs etc. I don’t have to go to maxpreps etc. You will find that page to be not updated and confusing.

I know Owen hasn't won more than 4 games since 2019 and lost to Heritage and Draughn by a combined score of 73-13 last season. That's a lot of ground to make up.

I know it can be done. So basically you have nothing to offer but last years scores. That has nothing to do with this years team. It is a totally different makeup from players to coaches to attitude so….

So Owen went 7-5 in 2019 and 4-3 in ‘20 and last year went 4-7. We only played 7 games in 2020. When is the last time McDowell finished above .500

We are 15-15 in the last 3 years and have less than 800 kids and play school around the same size or bigger. McDowell has 2000 kids and plays schools less than half their enrollment. Come on!

What did Owen JV finish last season, just curious?

And McDowell has nothing to do with this conversation. Its hilarious how thats everyone go to dig at me. Yes McDowell usually stinks but I am still here supporting them and other mountain teams regardless. Owen fans seem to disappear in the rough years. In fact, since Kenny Ford left, fan support took a nosedive.

I have been here every year. Owen had 22 turnovers running the triple option for the very first time in their lives. They had 23 fumbles and lost 14 of them. They were thin last year and young in a lot of positions. They are older in better shape more experience and it shows. You can’t take much from last season and we barely fielded a very unproductive jv. Heck at least we had one. draughn didnt.

McDowell has about 1,500 students actually but yes they should do better. Also McDowell went 5-4 last season and is hopefully on the rebound like your warhorses.

Back to the topic at hand.. If your player is a top 3 player in the conference then he is as good or better than Turbyfill at Mitchell or Dula at Draughn? That's not even counting the stud offensive linemen and transfer RB Mitchell has or all the other teams in he conference.

You said previously that Owen is a year or 2 away yet you ask me how our JV was. What were you basing a year or 2 away? That tells me you don’t know what you are talking about

6’3 180 Qb that played JV as a freshmen then varsity backup sophomore year. Used primarily on D as a sophomore but saw some time on Offense and left last year and is back. Yes on par with Dula and Turbyfill. Better than rb from Avery that transferred. Can fly. Has a big arm and tore up JV his freshmen year.

So what do you think Owen will finish this season? 9-2, 8-3?

Regular season anywhere from 7-3 to possibly 9-1. I think Chase Draughn and Mitchell are the big games. I think Heritage is a big one as well. I just think our experience and improvement that we will take them down

With that said a big injury or 2 could totally derail our hopes. As with any other small school with low numbers

By the way I have 4 nieces and nephews in the McDowell school system and I also know many former Owen players who have kids playing at McDowell right now. So I don’t exactly hate the school down there. My entire family moved to McDowell county but me

Nor do I hate Owen. I have some connections to the school as well. Owen and McDowell actually have a lot of connections going back to the 80s with coaches, players. etc. Mitchell needs a challenger in the WHC especially if Heritage is as down as people say. Maybe it can be Owen or Draughn.

I thought the 2019 team would but they were very inconsistent that year. When they were good they were good. When they were bad they were bad. They were bad that night vs Mitchell. It also didn’t help we were without a college football linemen that night due to suspension for a hit on a Franklin kid the week before. You have to be good up front vs Mitchell. That’s where it all starts
