1. Tell Caleb no 3-point attempts until he hits at least three 2-point goals first.
2. Save energy on D by playing some zone.
3. Use the energy saved from playing zone to run a motion offense.

Caleb is an important part of this team - unfortunately he will need to shoot his way out of his slump.
His slump has lasted 2.5 years. It’s not a slump. He’s is one of the least efficient guards in all of high major basketball. He has no idea what he is doing offensively off the ball.

1) At least 15 mins for JJ
2) Not quick enough to stop guard penetration, defense collapses, open threes. Mix in some zone
3) Against most zones, get the player at foul line touches.

Pikiell grows some balls and starts demanding execution.
Pikiell changes the offensive sets to create motion, passing, teamwork, and better shot selection.
Playing some zone on D. It has been effective at times during the limited amount of time we played it last year.

1. Insert Miller at PG. Don't care if he has to learn, right now we are basically 4 wings and Cliff and nobody can do a damn thing offensively. If he's good enough to be recruited at this level, let him play.

2. Cut Caleb's minutes. We've seen what he can do and it's not good enough. Split his minutes among Hayat and Jones and let Jaden come into his own. Frankly I would start cutting into Geo and Ron's minutes too. Jaden is the future of this program, let him develop.

3. Push the pace. One of the biggest differences from last year to this was the tempo of the game. Last year we could collect a rebound and get down to the other side for a quick bucket. They've done none of that this year. We play a hideous half court offense with 4 guys passing around the perimeter until one of them chucks up a brick at the last second. This goes back to inserting Miller, we need to be quicker as a team. We should be scoring a minimum of 6-10 points in transition per game.

1. Switch up some roles/minutes offensively....

Primary lineup:
PG - Baker (32 min).... he's better on the ball than off it, when he can probe into the zone and work for stepback and pullup jumpers from 10-15 feet, or take 3s off of screens
SG - Jones (20 min)... but he has to be the Tazmanian devil on offense, constantly moving and running off screens to get a catch and shoot opportunity
SF - Mulcahy (30 min).... secondary distributer, zone buster from the FT line and scrapping for boards
PF - Harper (32 min)... but more of a stretch 4, almost like a Jonathan Mitchell type role. He'd be playing above the arc, with Mulcahy living more at the high post and foul line extended.
C - Omoruyi (25 min)... posting up, looking for high passes to dunk, looking for low quick passes when Mulcahy/Baker can draw in the big to a double team

Off bench:
Hyatt/Mag/McConnell - unfortunately, all of these guys are 3/4 types, which doesn't give us a lot behind Baker or Jones. I'd expect Harper or Mulcahy can shift over into guard spots, and in a pinch McConnell.
Miller - we're really going to need more help at guard. if he can play, he needs to play.
Agee/Reiber - Just give us something. I'd expect Hyatt/Harper will probably need to back up Omoruyi at some points, too, though

2. Play some zone....

I think we need to try to get Jones on the floor more offensively, but he's a defensive liability right now until he gets more reps. We have a ton of length for a 2/3 zone defensively, and that can hide some of his shortcomings... provided he can play zone. It will also keep Omoruyi out of foul trouble and on the floor offensively.

3. Red light/Green light

McConnell should be given a red light to shoot a three if there is more than 5 seconds left on the shot clock, and even then he should be looking to pass if possible. Hyatt/Mulcahy should be given a yellow light - look for a 2 first, but if a pass comes to you in rhythm take the shot. Jones should be given a full green light to let it fly from deep, at least for now.

Shorten shifts, max 28 minutes per person, play 10 or 11 guys (if players earn it in practice), treat everyone equal.

Everyone sits twice per half.

You work hard on offense too.

UMASS guard can't be allowed to facilitate offense without a defender no more than 3 feet away. Blow bys are fine, players rotate, and that is where a lot of TOs are created.

Sorry I didn't follow the rules...more than 3 thoughts

I have no answers. Not one, certainly not three. Just shellshocked. I don't know how we went from people feeling disrespected for being picked 8th behind Indiana, Carino predicting us to go 22-9, Hoops Weiss saying we could best in east after secret scrimmages, Cliff being "unguardable" against Nova, selling out games in February, "my best team ever" to in short two weeks all four wheels falling off for this season and the entire future of the program in doubt.

First thing ...no one plays more than 28 mpg. More than that you have to pace yourself

1.) move geo back to point guard. He is an above average scoring point guard ... an average shooting guard (at best )

2.) moce Paul back to the wing. He just isn’t a point guard. He is a okay maker ...but not at the point guard spot

3.) jaden gets starting minutes ...my PT
Geo 28
Ron 28
Cliff 28
Aundre 26
Jaden 26
Paul 22
Caleb 22
Mag 12
Reiber/-Agee 8 (yes that means 4 mpg of small ball )

1. Drive to the basket...repeatedly
2. Crash glass
3. All play with Mag's intensity

Alternatively:

1. Recruit
2. Recruit
3. Pay recruits...only if needed

To OP, sorry but I can't list just three things. Right now this team is a mess. Here are my thoughts:

1. Drive to the basket to draw fouls. Stop settling for 3's especially when you can't even hit two's.
2. Run an actual motion offense offense and set plays for our shooters with more screens in the high and low post. I want to see ball movement. Enough of the dribbling around or setting a pick for one guy.
3. Mix up defenses which means play zone sometimes especially when the other team is getting too many inside chances and we're not rebounding well.
4. Caleb is NOT a starter. He plays defense well, but he can't shoot. When he's on the floor he needs to be the LAST option. Also, Pike needs to tell him, "No threes. Period!"
5. Mulcahy needs to drive more and once inside the paint look to shoot. Sometimes he's too generous in looking to pass, when he should be shooting the 6 foot floater.
6. Starting 5: (If Geo is okay) Geo, Ron, Cliff, Aundre and Paul. First players off the bench, Jaden, Mawot. The others according to who needs a blow and/or in foul trouble. That means Agee, Reiber and Palmquest.
7. Caleb should never bring the ball up. And when he's in there needs to be offensive players in there.
8. Utilize the transfer portal better. So far Pike has IMO failed in utilizing it when he can't bring in top recruits. Example, I noticed last night Gonzaga brought in a transfer who played for Iowa State and Penn State (I can't think of his name).

Maybe we should just sub on the fly and have players run on and off every time we go offense to defense.

If one were only to watch our team on the defensive side of the court some of those guys people would want 0. Half the game is played on each side of the court. They both have the same importance.

I love that so many people are saying play more zone. I have been thinking this also. The problem is Pike is a man to man coach, I doubt he goes zone.
1 play more zone
2 attack the basket
3 box out and rebound

Pike last year did play zone and it worked. He needs IMO to do more of that to make the other teams more honest and vulnerable.

1. Bring everyone into office individual and tell them what their roles are. Hold them accountable to their roles and expectations. When not met, pull them out of game.
2. Run more sets inside. Easy, basic stuff.
3. Shorten the roster to your best 8 players.

Right now, new offensive sets are not going to be implemented. It is too late into season. That is for the offseason. Now is for playing I would think.
