Only because custom demands illusory conference fealty.College football needs to ensure teams a chance to win a playoff berth on the field without going undefeated or being a blueblood/desirable/marketable media darling. How many undefeated Super Bowl champs have there been? How many 6- or more loss wild card champs? Didn't Marshall have 3 losses during an AA championship year? Was it mocked as 'undeserved'? The BCS structure DID make winning a conference title meaningful. But alas, the Herbstreits of the world publicly and ceaselessly decried the early elimination of too many bluebloods, frothing to see BCS rematches of Ohio State-Michigan and Alabama-LSU, rather than an undesirable, 'unworthy' Big East champ such as West Virginia. Never mind that WVU went 3-0 in the BCS, beating the SEC, ACC and Big 12 champs...the notion of winning on the field was far too dangerous, and could not be allowed to stand. Why should not the winner of a blueblood REMATCH be declared champion? Who cares if its victim had won the first meeting! That's ancient history - what is important is that two hypeable teams got on prime time TWICE!The NCAA needs only 1 football commissioner, divisions, non-division games selected by computer/power rankings and a sensible, limited playoff structure. Get conference and shill talking head politics OUT of determining who gets a shot to be champion. The committee concept sucks, by definition.</blockquote>
