After running thru the bag and the ball getting away from 1B, he gave the slightest jab step towards second. That alone could have been enough for the ump to have easily called him out.

The catcher backed up this play and got the ball back to 1B and they tagged Hatch.

That little step could have easily changed this game if the ump would have caught it.

Has nothing to do with the line, you can turn either direction after running thru first. But if it is considered an attempt at second at all, you now have reestablished your new base path between 1st & 2nd. Meaning you are in play again and can be tagged out.

Thanks, did you see it too? I was surprised I never saw it mentioned before I wrote the post! I was just waiting on the ump to call him out....thankfully he didnt!! I was also yelling at the TV for Hatch to get back, but he played it off as it didnt happen, which may have been what worked

I saw it, he took a step towards second, but never really made an attempt to go that way. I believe the UVA first baseman lobbied for it but the ump said no. The announcer did say he was close to getting in trouble.

Hatcher turned left. Doesn't matter whether he crosses the line or not. A lot of umps will ring you up there. You are taught since tee ball to run through the bag and turn right. Turning left is a move toward second.

That play was a judgment call for the ump. I suppose the ump thought Hatcher's move did not amount to an "attempt to advance to second base."

There's no dispute that Hatcher, at a minimum, made some sort of slight movement towards second base.

Thus, the ump definitely could have called Hatcher out.

Thank goodness he didn't.

That wasn't anything remotely close to an attempt at 2B. That was just an instinctive move when he saw the ball get past the first baseman that he did not act upon once he saw where the ball was.

Think how bad a call of out in that situation would have looked. It was judgement and it didn't take much to call him safe.
