I know there’s a women’s basketball board, but I think this would be of interest here. If you’re not interested, don’t read any further and forgive the intrusion.

WBB is 3-0 thus far, and I’ve watched most of the three games. Granted they were playing mid-major competition, but this team plays a very exciting, run and gun offensive style that is the polar opposite of CViv’s all defense/no offense style from the last 10 years of her tenure. Very fun team to watch if you don’t mind the somewhat porous defense. (Greene Rice FIG, look away, man, look away).

Destiny Adams is a walking double-double, and is dominant in the paint. She has back to back 30 point games, and today she had 36 points and 22 rebounds.

5-star freshman Kyomi McMiller is absolutely ELECTRIC. She occasionally gets out of control and makes boneheaded plays, but she has an incredible handle, crossover, and acceleration, and has a great mid-range game. She can get herself a bucket seemingly whenever she has an inch of space. You have to live with the bad because the good is… INCREDIBLE. There are THREE super 5-star players playing at the RAC this year, folks.

Chyna Cornwell is a rugged Center (believe she was a 4 or 5 star when recruited by CVS) and is an absolute rebounding machine, and also is pretty adept at scoring in the post.

There are some good players in the supporting cast too.

There are two smaller, quicker guards in Mya Petticord and Lisa Thompson, and they both provide good depth and can push the pace of play and also hit from deep.

The biggest portal addition is Boston College transfer (but NJ native) JoJo Lacey. She averaged 12 ppg last year, and is a 6-0 foot wing who can shoot from deep. Really good complementary piece to pair with the exciting quick guards and the post play of Adams and Cornwell.

Finally, true freshman Zachara Perkins is a 6-1 guard/wing who has an all-around game. She is trusted to bring the ball up on offense, and is pretty good in the paint.

Point guard Ayo Sidibe is not back from her season ending injury from last year. I think we will need her at some point to play defense.

Coquese Washington did a good job assembling this roster. I wish there were more shooting options (3-pt shooting will likely be a weakness), and I don’t know yet whether they will be better than a .500 team with the way they play defense, but at least they will be fun to watch. And Adams and McMiller will keep us in most games.

Yeah we are definitely improving but I agree we will likely finish around 500

@Degaz-RU Rutgers is predicted to finish No. 17 in the B1G. Any chance we can end the season in the 12 to 15 range?

We were dead last at No. 14 last season with two conference wins. If we can get five or six victories in-league this season that would be a huge improvement.

They averaged more than 18 turnovers/game last year. They have 44 in 3 games so far this year. If they don’t clean that up they aren’t going anywhere.

I don’t know enough about the rest of the league to be able to answer this. All I know is that our team is better than last year and more fun and explosive.

Please stop the false characterisation of CVS style being no offense. Strong defense is not that same as no offense. Depending on personnel and opponents, games featured strong defense-->turnover-->fast-break transition.

I was only referring to the last part of her tenure when things went south, and yeah maybe “no offense” is a little strong (although the offense was hard to watch in many of those years).

I was just trying to paint a picture of the contrasting styles between CVS and CW, and I’d rather this thread NOT turn into a back and forth on CVS. We’ve had enough of those.

The point is, this CW team is not going to wow us with defense, but they will be fun to watch because of the run and gun style and “fast” offense. A much more enjoyable product than certainly her first two years.

As women's basketball became more offense minded and great offensive players became more widespread, CVS continued to value defense at the expense of offense.

You hit the nail on the head. Those who like disciplined, "system" basketball will be frustrated by some of their decision-making and shot selection, but overall it's a much more entertaining brand of basketball... especially if you like offense.

If the staff can clean up some of the turnovers and improve the defense, this team could surprise some folks. Hopefully, they'll continue to make progress because I'd love to see some excitement (and fans) return for the women's program. They're definitely worth watching again.
