What am I musing with Syracuse? I don't get why so many are expecting them to be ACC contenders tnis year. I don't have anything against them but they finished last season sub 500 and 9 teams in the league had a better conference record than they did. Why are so many expecting them tpossibly leapfrog most of those teams this year? They played us great in the tournament, but looking at their overall conference record last year, I don't get why expectations for them are so high?

Because they are returning a guy who wasn't going to get drafted anyway?? I 100% agree.
They are returning 1 veteran, big deal, doesn't Syracuse always return veterans??

I don't see it. They are only bringing in 3 recruits, all 3 stars, so that's zero help. Sure they won 2 tournament games, but they got VERY lucky to even make the tournament.

They have the entire starting 5 back, plus a couple newcomers expected to help.
Then again, they don't have nba talent. What was I thinking? I remember the Holes won it in 17, and they had all those future nba millionaires. Oh wait, they didn't.

The Holes also went to the title game in 2016, whereas Syracuse shouldn't have even made the tournament this year??? That makes zero sense as an acceptable comparison.

Those 3 star newcomers are expected to help?? I like our odds!

Darius Bazely would have clearly helped Syracuse, but he chose the G-League. (the McDonald's All-American who committed to Syracuse, then backed out). From Cincinnati, he is a monster.

They inherited zero grad-transfers, and also lost a red-shirt freshman who was expected to contribute this year. So I REALLY don't see the extra help you are certain of. Please refresh us who those "helpers" will be?????????????

Also, those 5 starters were all terrible other than Battle and the other wing, lol.

I see Syracuse as a contender because they were obviously coming together late in the year in the NCAAs, and one could argue we were "very lucky" to beat them in the Sweet 16. In addition to Battle, the youngster Brissette (sp?) Is a developing talent, Howard is a reliable guard, and their other two bigs are on the rise. They bring in about 3 players who may help them(certainly better than their woeful depth last year).

I also say there's something to be said for having played TOGETHER, and returning leadership in the likes of Battle. I think our matchup(s) with them next season would be quite intriguing.

Again, since the Mac attack ran away from my question...who are these 3 magical players?? Are you referring to the three 3-star recruits? Sure, down the road I bet they develop. But next year, please!

Battle was the main guy at the beginning of the season. Brissett had a solid freshman season, Howard is a descent guard. Chuku was steady, and slowly improved. The starter that went from really bad to being a respectable player was the freshman Dolezaj. Don't go judging off their appearance grasshopper. Syracuse's issue was they just had no depth.
The three coming in are the question. Is Carey legit? Will Hughes, coming from ECU, be able to help, and does Boeheim's son have any talent?

Mac attack over and out grasshopper

You gotta scroll down some to find the joke thread!! LOL!!

@DukefanKY you are quite a comedian!

No one expected UVA to lose in the first round. No one expected the Cuse to make the sweet 16. Anything can happen. Some people think Clemson can challenge. The same with Va. Tech. You know UVA will be there. I do not like UNC.

Syracuse has experience coming back. Duke has minimal experience and no chemistry as of yet.

Ky Bowman will lead the league in scoring. Followed by Tyus Battle. Oshae Brissett will be one of the best forwards in the ACC and an All American candidate.

Who do you think will be Duke's top scorer? R.J. Barrett?

Every year we have a Duke player on our fantasy league team. Kennard and Trent did well for us the last 2 years. I like Duke. Right behind UM and SU.

The soapbox is yours!

I don't follow anyone but Duke. I can barely name a single player on any other team. I was just basing my comment about why everyone is so high on Cuse on the sub .500 record they had last year, and no significant help coming in. Based on the prediction I talked about that I found earlier, the ESPN experts believe they will finish 4th. That's a lot higher than I would have guessed. Again, I have no ill will towards Cuse or their fans. I reserve all of that for ky. The original post though, was about challenging Duke for the ACC. I will stand by my feeling that Cuse will not challenge for the ACC title. We'll see.

To put it another way, to win the ACC, I'm guessing they will need to win about 14-15 games. Last year they won 8.....I'm just not seeing why they should almost double that. What has changed that much? Maybe I'm wrong, and really I don't care. All I care about is where Duke finishes

That's why they play the game!

Seriously, who do you think will be Duke's top scorers? Please give your answer now. Then we can re check after the Canadian trip. Just for fun.

I haven't put much thought into who our top scorers will be. I'm more hoping that the scoring is well spread out because I think that makes a team tougher to prepare for, but if I were to guess, I think Barrett and Zion will be the top two. If we spread the floor well, I could see Bolden averaging much bigger numbers than he has before.

R.J. Barrett probably won't lead the ACC in scoring (mainly because Duke has a plethora of scoring options), but I'd consider him the favorite to be ACC Player of the Year.

I definitely think Barrett can be a top contender for ACC POY, but I would have to put Battle in that category as well. If Luke Maye continues his steady improvement he could be a candidate, although I expect Little to get more attention.

I read two trains of thought Maye. One writer suggested that his numbers will go down because Manley and Brooks will be expected to score more with a season under their belts. Another writer suggested Maye could be a 20/10 guy. Interesting to see which happens.

Duke will score in the 80s every game and since unfortunately almost all the scoring will come from the starters, except maybe AOC, all the starters will be at least 12-15 ppg. Maybe not another 20 pt. scorer like Bagley but healthy averages.

I could see Maye taking a step back. Teams might be catching on to him. He may be out of tricks.

A writer (cannot remember who) thinks AOC could have a Kennard type breakout season. Your thoughts?

I would obviously love to see it. AOC is a good 3pt shooter and can get to the basket. He's probably quicker than Luke. Unfortunately, I just don't see him getting the minutes to have a Luke type year. However I definitely see his PT on the rise. We need his outside shooting! OFC

Not as a sophomore, but I can definitely see him taking a big jump as a junior. I wouldn't be surprised to see AOC have a similar season as to what Luke had as a freshman (from a scoring standpoint) when he scored around 10-11 points/game.

Maye's numbers are very misleading. He puts up great numbers against mediocre teams and hits a wall against better talent.

I would happily take that scoring average from him this season. Very happily.
