I see and hear a lot of people don’t want Tyronn Lue as our head coach if Tim Miles gets fired. He’s a former Nebraska b-ball player, nba player and coach, and won the NBA title in Cleveland. What is the reason people don’t like him to come here to NU to coach?

The common reasoning seems to be the fact that he hasn't coached in college therefore not understanding recruiting.

That, and people minimize his time at Cleveland as Lebron basically ran that team. Same way many people look at Spoelstra coaching the Heat.

Just because he coached LaBron and LaBron liked him a lot is no reason he is a shoe in and recruit.. The NBA game is different in coaching X’s and O’s too.

Plus hiring SF was one thing for Football program but we don’t need another protégée as another Head Coach at Nebraska..

It's not happening. Here's what he said in 2013:

“I talked to a lot of guys who have coached college and in the NBA,” he said. “Coaching in college, you deal with the parents and the AAU coaches and making sure kids are going to class and getting their grades.

“In the NBA, it's all basketball. And people are telling me I can be a head coach in the NBA in two or three years. So I'm going to stay on this course for now.”

I doubt he’d have a problem recruiting initially. Kids will be wowed by his celebrity status and NBA resume. Hire a support staff with experience in the college and he’d be just fine. He may not like everything outside of basketball that comes w/ the college game, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be successful. I think it’s more that people are afraid he wouldn’t accept the position and it’s easier for them to say we didn’t want him anyway.

Why would lue want to coach at Nebraska? Besides it being his Alma mater. You realize after this season the cupboard is pretty shaky. Who ever the coach is will need players. Robey might go pro and you'll probably have a few transfers

This mirrors the claim that was posted here about 5,000 times when Erstad was hired to coach the baseball team, and yet somehow it hasn't happened.

Lue is more qualified from a coaching standpoint than Erstad was, and maybe he would work his *** off and assemble a staff that can find and develop players. But top recruits are not going to beat down NU's door based on anything he did in the NBA.

And who knows, Roby might just transfer if he doesn’t like his pro prospects, and how could you blame him if he did decide to transfer?

OMG we are literally the worst power 5 program in NCAA history. If Lue came to nebraska what could he possibly ruin? Those 16 win seasons? Fans act like our BB team is a normal program with a normal history...there is no way Lue would come to coach our pathetic program but if he did it would be a gawd send.

Sick

I bet you there your plenty of programs that are below 0.500 in college basketball.. Nebraska isn’t the worst in winning pct..

Nebraska has what, an all time win percentage of about .525? And Husker Hoops has a winning record over Colorado, so they've got that going for them.:)

Give me Mussleman from Nevada over Lue anyday!.... Mussleman has proven he can both recruit and coach a team at a high level in college. Lue basically had the Head Coaching title but that team was coached by LeBron.

For the record I’m not against him coming to coach here. I just firmly believe he isn’t stupid enough to take the job if offered.

We lost to Rutgers. Tournament win or fire.

Lue is more qualified as a coach as you said, more relevant to the recruiting base, and wouldn’t have the scholarship disadvantages of our baseball program. I agree that hiring a former Husker just b/c they played professionally is ignorant. Their resumes are nowhere near comparable as far as relevance for a coaching position. Lue was on the path to being an NBA head coach regardless of Lebron wanting him in Cleveland.

How many of the really good players on our roster are here because of Tim Miles? How many are here because of Kenya Hunter?
They’re all here b/c of Hunter or past assistants. It’s really too bad that Lue wouldn’t be able to hire such assistants.

Probably because he has zero experience coaching college ball, has shown zero interest in coaching college ball, and has shown zero interest in coaching at Nebraska. Outside of that, I can't think of anything.

Anyone claiming they wouldn't want Lue to be our coach is simply attempting to save face because it's pretty clear that isn't going to happen. It's like when somebody decommits and people suddenly start claiming we didn't want them anyways. They just don't want to look naive.

Not being naive, I for one think Moos could do better than Tyronn Lue..

Tyronn Lue coming back to coach here would literally be the best development in the HISTORY of husker basketball. He played for Phil Jackson and won a championship. He played with Michael Jordan on the wizards. He was a long time assistant for the Celtics under Doc Rivers. He coached Lebron to a title, obviously. He would immediately have a mountain of credibility with any high school player in the country.

It is not going to happen... but to think we could get somebody better is silly.

Not eligible to coach at the college level, Tyronn left school early for the NBA and never finished his degree.

No one would disagree with that, but LeBron actually really likes Ty Lue & at least we would have some minute chance to land Lebron’s offspring.

First we need that minute chance that he’d take the job.
