Two nuns were found dead Thursday in a home in Holmes County, Mississippi, authorities said.

The women, one of whom was a member of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, were found stabbed in a residence in Durant, north of Jackson, Holmes County Coroner Dexter Howard said.
The Catholic Diocese of Jackson said the two nuns didn't show up Thursday morning at a clinic they operate.

Clinic workers called police when the pair didn't arrive, said Maureen Smith, a spokeswoman for the Catholic Diocese of Jackson. Authorities arrived at the home, saw evidence of a break-in and found two bodies, she said. Officials believe a car is missing.

Howard said the bodies were sent to the state crime lab, which will do the autopsies.
The Kentucky-based Sisters of Charity of Nazareth said the community is in prayer.
"SCN President Susan Gatz asks that all 'pray in gratitude for the precious lives of Sisters Paula (Merrill) and Margaret (Held) ... they served the poor so well. Because we are gospel women, please also pray for the perpetrators."

Merrill was a nurse practitioner in Mississippi for more than 30 years and had been at the Lexington Medical Clinic since 2010. According to the Sisters of Charity website, the clinic saw 8,000 patients in 2014, many of whom are poor and uninsured.

Held, 68, was also a nurse practitioner. She had been a member of the School Sisters of St. Francis in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for 49 years and had lived in Mississippi for decades.
"These sisters have spent years of dedicated service here in Mississippi. They absolutely loved the people in their community," said Bishop Joseph Kopacz of the Jackson diocese.

Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann said the sisters had made the community a better place to live and lamented their deaths.

"Unbridled love and care for mankind has been met with unparalleled savagery," he said.

Rodney Sanders Arrested, Charged With Capital Murder in Killings of Mississippi Nuns

A suspect has been arrested in the killings of two nuns whose bodies were found in their Mississippi home Thursday, authorities said late Friday.

Rodney Earl Sanders, 46, was charged with two counts of capital murder "after an exhaustive interview" Friday night, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.

Sanders, of Kosciusko, is charged in connection with the killings of Sister Margaret Held and Sister Paula Merrill, both 68, who werefound dead in their homein the rural town of Durant Thursday morning, the bureau said.

"Sanders was developed as a person of interest early on in the investigation," MBI Director Lt. Colonel Jimmy Jordan said in a statement. "With the cooperation of the Durant and Kosciusko Police Departments, Holmes County Sheriff's Department and the Attorney General Office this heinous crime has been resolved."

The killings were discovered when the nuns didn't show up for work at the Lexington Medical Clinic, where they both worked as nurses caring for people who couldn't afford medical care, authorities said.

A car missing from their home was found Thursday night about a mile away, police said.

Police have not released as cause of death in the killings. Rev. Greg Plata, who oversees the small church the nuns attended, said police told him they were stabbed.

Sanders is being held in an undisclosed detention center awaiting his initial court appearance.

Kosciusko is a town of just over 7,400 around 17 miles east of Durant, a town of around 2,600, according to 2010 census figures.

I had a similar case years ago. Two nuns were raped at knife point in monastery after climbing over stone wall. Artist composite made and distributed at roll call the following shift. My squad was assigned to the area of the crime for the night shift.

I spotted a man walking who fitting the description and the composite looked like a picture from Olan Mills. We stopped him to talk, but he was not outgoing. Took him to 2nd district station where the night commanding officer directed us to release the perp to two black detectives. They broke him and got a confession in very short order. Big news in a highly Catholic city. Felt good to be involved in the arrest.
