1) Jalen Hurd is injured. This is bad for us. Very bad.

2) Our DC is coaching his last game with the team. As someone who values stability in bowl games, I don't think this is very good for our team either.

Now that I've hedged enough, good luck tomorrow! I hope it's an enjoyable game, and I hope everyone had a fantastic new year's celebration.

For Jalen's sake I hope the first is just that, a rumor. However, if it proves to be true I wish him a complete recovery. As to the second, I assume this would be a promotion for your DC so wish him the best of luck. Your point about stability is shared and I couldn't help but reflect on that point with regard to what could have been for Tennessee when Lane Kiffin was given credit for Alabama's impressive offensive performance tonight. The stability in our program can not be ignored as a factor that has proven to be important for us.

All that said we started this season with a similar rumor regarding a supposed injury to a key Stanford player that proved to be erroneous.

Today's game already looks to have some interesting parallels to our contest with Stanford.

Jalen is injured but not sure what it is.

I am not sure we beat NU without him. He is our leading rusher but does a lot in pass protection and catches the ball as well. Not sure that Kamara and freshman John Kelly are up to the task. JMO.

Thanks for filling us in. This was his reported uncle's responsive post referenced above:

It is true. Mild to moderate strain. He will play on it as much as he can. Pretty unfortunate. Hopefully, Alvin and the guys will have a big day.

Also of note it was reportedly observed that Jalen has not appeared in any of the team activity photos from this week so that adds to the mystery of when this injury actually occurred.

When our mods say it is a game time decision it means he is out. 99 percent of the time. Huge loss for vols

That is what will kill us. He is a beast in pass protection.

If he's out, that really sucks. Win or lose, this game should be between the best of NU and the best of Tennessee. It's already bad enough that NU will be without Nick Van Hoose in what would've been his last game for the Cats.

Remembering the last time these two teams met, I hope the team meal yesterday went off without a hitch.

I don't get this reaction. At all. If we win the game, are you really going to think back and say "yeah, but their starting running back was hurt, so it's kind of an empty victory"?

Yeah, but now when we win we'll have to hear, "yeah, but NU would've had no chance if Hurd was healthy."

I don't think it would be an empty victory. I just want to see the best players play. It makes me a little sad that Van Hoose isn't playing, and somewhere there's a SmellyCat equivalent on the other side who wants Hurd to play.

I think he will play and carry it 20+ times

I've seen the same thing. Hamstring injury. Kamara is listed as the starter. I suspect Hurd will not play at all. If he could play, he'd be starting.

Major suckage for the guys in orange. This game just got a heck of a lot more interesting...makes me very nervous as a fan of the "good guys." We have a young, injured group of O-line men which sounds similar to you guys. Against stout defences like NU, Hurd has been as valuable as a blocker than he has been as a RB. This game just got a whole lot tougher for the guys in orange.

Hopefully there are no more injuries from now til the final whistle. Best of luck, fellas. I'll pop on after the game either way. Really appreciate the convo with this forum.

I think our DC is coaching his last game too.

I doubt Hurd plays.

I am a Tennesse fan that feels the game could go either way. The Alabama Michigan State game means absolutely nothing determining the winner of this game. If Jalen Herd doesn't play that hurts Tennnessee big time.

A good night's sleep, some Icy Hot, and Advil and Hurd will be fine.

If Hurd can't go, then the Vols certainly will be hurt. UT having run success is key to the game, and Kamara, while versatile, has not shown himself to be an every down back. Hurd is the big bruiser and the issue for the Vols is that the next man up behind Kamara is a true Freshman. This is why the Vols are not quite where they need to be as a team. Butch is still building quality depth. Regardless, even if Hurd plays it's a head scratcher as to why the Vols are favored. Good luck NW.
