Turns out I could actually vote

I didn't think I could since I was registered as an Independent, but I can, I just have to request which party's ballot I want, or choose the non-partisan ballot.

I actually haven't been registered as an independent that long as far as elections go. I have always considered myself an independent but would switch my voter registration based on who was in the White House so that I'd have a voice in choosing who was going to run against them.

I don't think it was this way when I lived in MD, where I started doing the switching. So, anyway, it turns out I did get to vote for a nominee in the primaries.

Yay me!
(although I feel kinda stupid, because maybe it was like that in MD too and I didn't have to do all of the switching my voter registration)

Yes, you can select a D ballot, an R ballot or non-partisan. A lot of the local offices, family court judge, circuit court judge, magistrate, etc. are non-partisan anyway (meaning you can vote for whomever you choose). On thing to consider is the Governor's race; you have three candidates on the D side and one on the R side.

I knew I'd be able to vote for all of the local offices and whatnot ... didn't think I'd have a voice in the others. I stopped and voted this morning.

That's the way it is in Virginia - I walked in and they saw that I'm registered as an independent, and asked me which ballot I wanted.

They never asked me, they just pointed me to a purple piece of paper that gave me my choices. They said that it was against the rules for them to actually ask me.

So, the school levy got voted down AGAIN in my county. Another example of how economically depressed communities stay economically depressed and make it harder for people to come out of it. Kids in this school system aren't going to have the books and technology and other programs and everything that other kids in other places are going to have because everybody is poor and don't want to pay additional to improve the school systems.

It was closer than it was last time at least ... but still got voted down.

More than likely now the SBA will deny the county any matching funds for new projects as well.

Yes, you're probably right. It's like a horrible snowball. Everything sucks, but it won't get better because collectively we aren't smart enough to connect the dots, which means we vote against better education systems, which keeps us unable to connect the dots, which kills other opportunities and the county keeps losing ground.

Overall, I like where I live. It's a small town that's relatively safe and crime free. Sidewalks, streetlights, community events on the courthouse lawn, nice outdoor activities to do close by, decent youth recreation programs etc. ... but there are definitely some things that are frustrating about it

All the levies in Mon county passed. I think they said on the radio that the average homeowner would be paying 165 more a year in taxes but if I ever need a bus, there will continue to be a stop at our community.
