Tommy Nobis dead at 74....

Former Texas and Atlanta Falcon great and a member of the CFB Hall of Fame.
I remember in the mid-1960's watching (and hating) him play for Texas from 1963-65.
He averaged 20 tackles a game and was part of a Texas defense that shut down Roger Staubach and Navy 28-6 in the Cotton Bowl during Nobis' sophomore year.
In the three years he played at Texas, OU scored two touchdowns, losing by scores of 28-7, 28-7 and 19-0.
His tackle on Namath at the goal line in the 1965 Orange Bowl preserved Texas' 21-17 win over Alabama....but I never wanted a gimpy legged Namath to try to run the ball in.
The other two linebackers I loved watching at that time were Dick Butkus and Carl McAdams. McAdams was one of OU's greatest linebackers. I wish his OU teams had been better.

I was stationed at Homestead AFB when Nobis "stopped" Joe Namath. To this day, no one I know can convince the Tide fan Joe Namath didn't break the plain.

Nobis is a legend in ATL. The first ever draft pick of the Falcons and after a solid career in the NFL, he had an enormous presence in the community due to his charitable and philanthropic work. Even for a horn, he was a great guy. He'll be missed.
