Come on people. Too many threads are getting locked that don't need to be -- yet.
The amount every taxpayer owes was locked for political reasons and it hadn't got political at the point it was locked. Read it, there was no blaming the debt on political parties ( other than stating facts) and was just a thread with a good discussion. That's why people come to the ZZL!
We want this site to grow with new members and stopping good discussion is not the way to do that.
Mods need to loosen their leash a bit.

All in on the OP
As in I think I am all out on renewing The discussion was pretty good but was never allowed to continue. This is the ZZL thread for goodness sakes
DES put UNC Athletics "on the map" He was very politically involved . Some liked it , some did not. It was part of the discussion
It is a fact that a US senator was involved in getting Belichick here. It is the way things roll in College Sports today sometimes. The reason that Senator was influential was his political affiliation with UNC PTBs. That is part of the picture of College sports.
We should be able to touch on all that in our discusssions of sports..
Nobody likes the US debt ,"either side". Maybe ZZL is a good spot to discuss that
I guess not

Before the lock …….

One thing to know about the Federal government’s debt and ‘how much every taxpayer owes’ is that much of this debt is also held by Americans in some way.

The chart below is about a year old; but it has the virtue of being convenient and conveying the point.

About 1/3rd of Federal debt is held by various parts of the Federal government itself -- eg., Social Security Trust Fund .. Federal Reserve Banks. Another 1/3rd or so is held by Americans themselves in some way -- either as direct investors or as part of something like a pension plan or mutual fund. 5% is held by American financial institutions. And another ~ 5% is owned by state and local governments. Only 24% of the $38 trillion is held by foreign governments or others outside the U. S.

I would generally agree that the aggregate amount of debt and the on-going level of deficit spending under non-crisis economic circumstances seems imprudent. But, we have double-entry accounting for a reason. Just looking at one side of the Balance Sheet is not the whole story.

You are, of course, correct. It is also quite possible, perhaps probable, that we do not all want this particular off-topic forum of the site to grow.

As a reminder, political discussion is not permitted on the ZZL. That includes political-adjacent discussion, or discussion that is significantly likely to devolve into political discussion. A thread doesn't have to devolve into contentiousness to be locked for political discussion.

The referenced thread seemed to be started with a political perspective in mind, and included direct and indirect discussion of specific bills and political figures. That sort of discussion crosses the line into political discussion.

We try to allow some latitude for economic discussion that is more broad-based. We also understand that some folks would like more latitude for some political discussion on the ZZL, but that's not permitted at this point. Thanks for everyone's understanding in that regard.
