I was listening to a podcast about the purpose, history, and study of Joy. It wasn't a self help or find your joy type of podcast, but it did get me to thinking about what simple things bring me joy.

So, I'm going to write down a few, in no particular order.

My family, in general.
Watching UNC sports, especially when we win.
Mowing the yard and working in the yard. I like mowing to the point that sometimes I mow my neighbor's yard just to keep going. I have an electric mower, so I might get additional batteries. 😁
A really good meal, eat in or eat out, and it's even better with exceptional customer service.

And to be honest, posting and discussing things with so many people on the interwebs over the years.

I thought this Bob Odenkirk clip was pretty poignant for me last week, but that's because I have two really small children at home.

1. Standing at the top of a ski slope out west on a blue bird day with cold air hitting your lungs

2. A pured golf shot

3. Mountains in the fall

4. Christmas morning

5. Long, solo drives

6. Laughing until it hurts

7. Football. All of it. The sound of high school bands. The sounds of Chapel Hill on a crisp October day walking to Kenan. The athleticism and close games in the NFL. I love how uniquely American it is.

8. A great dog

9. Another vote for a freshly-mowed yard

10. Walking into a place or home where everyone there is excited to see you, and you them.

A few of mine and why.

Being the first person at the boat ramp around 3:30-4AM. That telltale smell of a body of water being close. Idling out of a no wake zone and shooting off into the early darkness with a weird oxymoronic calm fueled by anticipation and excitement for another morning in the water.

Riding a skateboard. Feeling the paved surface through the wheels, bearings, trucks, and deck pulse through my feet and legs into my soul. That clickity clack of pavement seams or the hum of urethane rolling on a wood ramp. Feeling the aluminum hanger of a truck meet a concrete curb or metal coping, mineral wearing on mineral soothes any frustration or anger I may be feeling. Bombing a hill with my loose *** trucks, approaching the precipice of disaster to only get low and ride out the death wobbles.

Watching my wife’s career take off and her successes from all her hard work and determination. I’m more proud of her than anything I’ve ever accomplished. If I had a third of her work ethic, determination, attention to detail, and intelligence…..I’d be ruling the world hahaha. GD

When my big fluffy old man of a cat lays down on my chest, purring and marking my chin with his cheeks. I’m gonna miss that dude when he leaves us in the next couple years. Age is really catching up to him.

Taking someone fishing and putting them on fish. Especially someone who isn’t experienced but has a budding love for the endeavor. Bonus points if it’s a kid.

Watching my traitor of a dog be absolutely enamored with my wife. That’s been her dog since the first day they met.

Cooking for people. I’ll spend all day prepping and cooking for a one hour meal with friends or family. Sitting around a table sharing food I put a lot of love into and sharing it with others.

This is just a few and there are layers to these that bring joy also.

What's a pured golfshot Pine?

For me:
Making my young kids laugh/smile
Carolina sports
Time laughing with my best friends
Moments with my wife when life and stress aren't taking over the moment and we make each other laugh and smile
Anytime i can be on a ski resort
Anytime I can be on a golf course
Cooking a meal for others that is genuinely enjoyed
Mowing the grass
Doing healthy things that pay benefits to others
Realizing that alcohol is a complete waste to your life and feeling good about making good decisions
Catching a trout (the tug is the drug)

My birthday - celebration of every year I get to still be here
Being retired
My grandsons showing me something new they've learned
Perfect hot coffee
Petrichor (smell of rain after a dry spell)
Snow days when I don't have to go out
Any time our Heels beat dook or lolstate, no matter what sport
Sunday morning walk on campus with my sweet old dog

A really good fart.
Eating a meal one of you chefs prepared with love
That I don't golf
That I don't fish
That I don't drink coffee
RUSH
The moment I pay the neighborhood kid who just moved [sic] my lawn
And of course, all things Carolina

I agree with the paragraph about the wife. My wife is incredible at home and work.

I'm not the gold enthusiast, but I'm thinking that an example of this may be that shot from Happy Gilmore when your approach on a per 5 is dead center of the fairway and set up perfect for a chip and a putt into an Eagle.

Which, with my skills would end up a double bogie. 😁

She is such a rockstar. I’ve done well for myself but she is such a high achiever I can’t help but admire her!

I read that as "telltale smell of a body in the water" and although my response probably says something about me, I laughed before I reread it.

Something I've been working to have more often that brings me joy.

A good uneventful drive home. Just listening to a podcast or music, steadily moving, and nothing crazy.

Seeing my wife's smile when she looks around the table when our kids and grandkids honor her on her birthday at her restaurant of choice.

Getting that first evergreen smell of Christmas for the first time each year.

Sitting down to any Carolina game, regardless of which sport it is.

Having the oysters Rockefeller at Ruth's Chris. Best I've ever eaten.

Attempting to repair something around the house and finding out I've succeeded.

Helping an elderly person any way they need help. They appreciate it.

There are many more but I could be here all day.

Agree on gratitude.

I appreciate the blessings I have every day. I manage a group of 7 (currently 4) and they are just great. If they were not such good go getter type people, my job would be such a pain.

I'm also grateful where I am with my job and the pay. I really don't believe I'm the best at my job, I've gotten some breaks that really helped out.

I think about you from time to time. You have plenty of reasons to focus on the negative, but you have a lot of really positive stuff in your life too. I hope you will continue to have the great attitude you seem to have now.

Thanks man, it's something that I have to be aware of and it's easy to slip, but I work on it.

There is no point in being miserable.

All things considered, I'm very fortunate and I appreciate that.

A fire in the fireplace. Messing with it, not messing with it, the feel of the radiant heat, the sound of it, the smell of wood smoke.....everything about the process.

The laughter of children.
Spending time with friends and/or family.
God/Jesus (Not really 3rd, but more of a "serious" joy, then the two above. And.....sometimes a struggle).
Dogs (especially my wife's and mine.....mostly my wife's - he's a Mama's boy).
Helping someone else - family, friend, or stranger.
A nice sunset or sunrise - especially at the beach.
