It's not just basketball, it's football too. I've said this is the program (along with MSU) to emulate. They don't kill it on the recruiting trail in football and not in basketball either as far as I know yet they perform pretty well. Many NCAA tourney appearances, big bowl games, B10 championships, etc..The coaches have a system they employ and they stick to it and build a team and develop players into stars and contributors.
Their previous athletic director, Pat Richter, really did a nice job. I'm not sure what kind of athletic department they had when he took over but he hired both Barry Alvarez and Bo Ryan.

Wisconsin is a nice story but based on past history not likely to happen at Rutgers.One comment by a Wisconsin player after the defeat of Kentucky stuck with me " to play at Wisconsin you must be a consistent shooter".In other words the coaching staff can teach the other basic fundamentals of a successful basketball team but the player must be able to make the open jump shot.
I know that Donna Shalala is disliked on this board, but UW's reemergence as a major athletic power rests with her. She wanted the university's athletic program to match its academic program. She hired Barry Alverez and tried to recruit him Miami when she left.
Just shut up. If you can find players in Wisconsin you can surely find them in NJ. It all starts at home.
Finding the players is only half the battle. Developing them into players who can win together is the other half.
3 years ago, Wisconsin was 10th in Big Ten scoring (60 pts per game)

Ryan normally doesn't have as much of an offensive punch as his team has had over the last 2 years (4th in scoring in 2014, 2nd in scoring in 2015) as he has hit some solid double, triples and even HR's in recruiting over the last few years and developed some top talent.
With Hayes announcing he is coming back next year, that should help with Ryan's team next year...but losing Kaminskey will be huge but the wild card is Dekker, who had an amazing NCAA Tourn run (didn't play well though in Championship game), who is thinking about jumping to the pro's now after his Junior Year.
If Dekker leaves, Ryan will still probably finish in the Top half of the conf, but their scoring will be down...and he will win low scoring games, just like he has had to do in the past.
Lets not pretend that Kaminsky was some chump off the street that they thought would be a benchwarmer. They thought he was pretty good. He just turned out to be far better than advertised.
When we signed Ray Rice who was a 3 star did we think he was going to be All American quality? no--he just turned out to be better than he was rated.
Its called good recruiting and its something that is very foreign to our program.
You don't "develop" a player into the player of the year. The guy is an amazing talent.

Thanks to us Badgers and MSU, your AD will be getting a nice check of close to $1.200,000 for the Final four appearances I think, if not this year than in the future when it kicks in.
Slowly but surely the money situation will get itself straightened out, you'll find the correct coaches and program balance and bingo, you'll be a powerhouse.
The money is a big issue.

He's an insanely agile 7 footer with great hands and 25 foot range.

How can you know what they thought he would be. They obviously thought something of him so they offered a scholarship but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Lots of kids are on scholarship but never amount to much.
During the telecast they said in his first 2 years he barely played and now 2 years later he's player of the year. If he was so great out of high school he would have been playing early. Ray Rice played early is his career and contributed pretty early and his talent was apparent early even if misjudged by college recruiting sites. Kaminksy barely played early in his career. I'm sure they could have used his talents if he could contribute early on because in the past as said above Wisconsin is usually an offensively challenged team.
This was his offer list out of high school. Bradley, DePaul, Southern Illinois, Northern Illinois, Wisconsin, Northwestern were his offers so outside of Wisconsin certainly not a who's who. He's just a typical run of the mill average player (definition of 3 star). It takes some coaching and development along with some of his innate ability to bring it all out. He's not like some of these Kentucky or Duke freshman whose talent you can see right off the bat. Put Kaminsky under some other coach and I couldn't tell you he would have blossomed into what he did. He may have continued to languish on the bench or may not have developed at all. I think coaching and development have a lot to do with both Wisconsin's basketball and football programs.
Are they a bunch of schlubs off the street their grabbing from high school? No but they're generally not stars either and could easily just languish on the bench or not amount to much either as a contributor or occasional star without the proper coaching & development.

Most of Bo's recruits must wait their turn.
Jared Berggren who was in front of Kaminsky waited for Jon Leuer to graduate and Leuer waited too, probably for Brian a Butch and Stiemsma.
They are All still playing, either overseas or NBA.

Great point....as it would probably be hard to find a National Player of the Year who had 2 previous ull college seasons with basically zero production.
Thats a huge leap/jump and obviously development.
