I have been searching for a Rutgers team to compare this start with and then it became obvious. There is no Rutgers team. But there is a team.Yes another team. UConn 1989-90.Losing season in the Big East the year before. Coached by Steve's coach and mentor. Unranked. And then boom.January kicks in, the great Georgetown win and we all know the the ride ended at the Meadowlands on an Elite day in March. Let's hope.

Win against Minnesota I’m taking a sip of the Kool aid. Win against Iowa too and then I’m gulping it.

Jim Calhoun's first 3 years UConn
1986-87 9-19 (3-13)
1987-88 (14-13 reg. season) 1-1 BE tourney 20-14 (4-12) NIT Champ
1988-89 18-13 (6-10) NIT Quarterfinals
4th year
1989-90 31-6 (12-4) T1 and wins BE tourney and loses in Elite 8

Pikiell's first 3 years
2016-17 15-18 (3-15)
2017-18 (13-18 reg season) 2-1 B1G 15-19 (3-17) if not for StonyFord and couple close B1G losses like MSU and Purdue, they might have made NIT that year, and who knows the way Corey was playing at the end of the year.
2018-19 14-17 (7-13) collapse at the end of the year prevented NIT or post season tourney
4th year
2019-20 13-4 (4-2) 14 games, B1G tourney and Dance to come ???

Sounds like a perfect comparison. Hope we can finish the way UConn did.

I met Greg Ecomou in Stamford a few years back through show biz - not sports. He was a guard UConn team when Calhoun came in. He said from the first practice he knew the team was headed in a new direction.

Good thread. Also think of PJ’s Shoe team that first went to NCAAs in 88 as 8 seed and reached 2nd rd. Also I think of our approach and coaching up akin to Al Skinner in 90s at BC (not style of play). Our style is Virginia-like.

Not to mention that Pikiell himself was a player on that team.
