just in case one of you smart asses win the lottery, here's what you need to do.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/money...what-to-do-when-you-win-the-lottery/78508764/

Hot damn!

They are sucking all the fun out of it for sure.

Eh, the only thing I disagree with is not taking the lump sum.

I say this because the actuaries have me only living 15 to 20 more years. If I die, the annuity as I understand it isn't transferable to your next of kin.

Ergo, at my age, I take the lump, and with any luck I'll spend the last dollar the last minute I'm alive.:D

I've always thought the deciders who run these lottos should break the big national ones into million-dollar winning tickets. Thus, this year you would have 800 new millionaires who will blow it all rather than one guy who couldn't piss it away in 10 lifetimes.

Unless he likes fast cars, yachts, and women who love shoes.

I know the odds, I get it, but I'm buying one anyway. Have you ever bought a bottle of water?
Well probably not unless I'm dying of thirst and it is the only thing available. At least I get something from that whereas you get absolutely nothing from buying a power ball ticket.

Heard on the radio the other night that bottled water is the number one biggest waste of money we have. The water is not even as safe as tap water because the oversight for tap water is so much greater. There are a lot of things we waste our money on. It's all personal preference. I get more out of buying a powerball ticket than I would buying a pack if smokes. With a powerball ticket I'm not harming myself or anyone else. Heck, I get more out of throwing money in a trash can than buying a pack of smokes.

Hey if you like throwing your money away then go for it. I prefer to keep mine

Do you drive a bigger car than you need? Water your lawn in the summer? Pay for dry cleaning? Have your house cleaned? Get your hair cut at a place other than the cheapest place in town?

Yeah, that's right. I'm also a human. I don't pretend to be perfect and sit on my high horse and judge people. I enjoy life. I drink a cold beer or two once in a while and take vacations. Just took my wife to Ireland for a week this past September. I also support 3 adopted children, 2 foster children, 4 dogs, and 2 cats and don't owe a penny to a credit card company. And somehow I still manage to be able to afford to buy a lottery ticket once in a while for the fun of it. Yeah, it's fun to imagine that I may have a winning ticket for a couple of days. But what do I know, I'm mathematically challenged. Keep on judging.

So you realize you have no chance of winning thought right? I don't see the fun in buying a lottery ticket when you know you can't win. Its like completely throwing money in the trash. I just figured someone with a financial background would know better

The real question here BW is why do you even care what people spend their money on....Really? You just like to argue.

No, my chance is about 1 in 292 million. Nearly no chance, but still a chance. You have no chance of winning since you don't buy a ticket. Who's mathematically challenged?

I highly doubt any reputable financial adviser would advise their clients to play power ball or any type of legalized gambling. Its just not smart. Now, if you wanna play it just for kicks then more power to ya. I'm just saying its not a smart move. 1 in 292 millions means you aren't going to win and surely, being a financial planner, you must realize this.

Easy there 4623, that kind of rote logic makes some of these fellows fall into the prostrate position wailing for their mamas...:D

Damn this is funny. Narrow minded crap as usual. Why is anyone mathematically challenged because they buy lottery tickets. I think some people enjoy playing the lottery. Stirring up crap as usual. A store in Austin sold a ticket yesterday that had all but one number. I guess I'll have to buy some now. Yankee triggered my gambling itch. I hope I can find a GA meeting before I relapse.

Yep, careful there MM...gambling is a seductive *****.

I still have to double down on my inner strength every time I get a courtesy card from Hard Rock. They're really good at marketing with the free suite, 500 bucks free play and the comped buffet for two.
It's all I can do...

Wait. No blasphemy on Alcohol.

Now here's where I'm confused. If I won, it's not what I would do, but rather who would I call. That's some serious money that places an instant target on your back. Sammy signed for a gauranteed $50 Million. This kind of money would be about 12 times that. Who the hell would you trust to manage that kind of money? Can you trust a lawyer? Can you trust even a committee or board of people? You'd need security immediately. Would you even trust them? I only know one person that can make a call to connect me to a few MLB players that has done very well with their monies. Having said this, I'd love the opportunity to attempt to answer these questions! I'm buying another quick pick and a 12 pack.

Lottery players are 25 times more likely to become President of the United States than winning Wednesday's lottery.

"So there's a chance!" According to my wife.

A lot of misconceptions about the lottery. One of the biggest ones is that if you opt for the 30 annual annuity payments and die before they are paid the unpaid monies go back to the state. Not true. The annuity is an asset just like any other. It is a part of your estate and the remaining dollars can be paid all at once from the lottery commission or the annuity can continue in your benefactors name.
Another big one is that you would receive the amount that is advertised. If the lottery hits 1.3 billion as they predict, the cash sum would be roughly 850 million, and half of that amount would go to taxes, unless your state has no income tax.
And no you can't move and then ask for your prize; it is calculated within the laws of where the ticket was sold, unless the purchaser lived out of state when he bought the ticket. Example: If you live in Florida and bought the ticket in Oklahoma on a visit then you would not pay state tax. However, if reversed then Oklahoma would view the winnings as part of your income and even though Florida didn't hold out tax, Oklahoma would collect its part as they do on all of our earnings.
If you choose the annuity, the 850 million is invested in an annuity which after 30 years of interest will have paid out a total of 1.3 billion, hence the advertised number.
If you want to take a lump sum and wonder what your total take would be after taxes on any large jackpot like the one coming up, here is an easy way for Oklahomans to determine that number.
Take the advertised amount and multiply by .333 and that is (with the standard tax rate for that amount) is what you will pocket. In other words, you actually only (ha) pocket 33.3% of the advertised amount. 1.3 billion would put 432,900,000.00 in your pocket.
So 43,333,333.00 each year before taxes for 30 years (and yes if you die early your heirs keep it)
or 432,900,000.00 right now.
An absolute nightmare to be in......right?
