Week Zero will be the new start of the regular season. That puts opening night on Aug 21. 16 more playoff teams per class. 384 playoff teams. Hot of the presses. I’m pretty surprised, but it passed by more than 100 votes.

Does this mean, all the 4-5 teams, and most of the 3-6 teams will be given a playoff birth?

EDIT: I'm too lazy to figure it out myself.

I would usually crank out a 2025 field “If the 384-team Playoffs started today…” right about now. But I’m at work all day. Poor timing. I’m sure someone will knock it out for us.

here was my projected 48 team 8A a couple weeks before season's end (LWE as 2 seed), but re-creating this is more work than I'm willing to do right now. Gives you an idea, however:

Why get rid of the scrimmage?
Don't think teams get rid of the Week 0 Scrimmages. They'll likely just move it up a week honestly or maneuver around to make it work.

Some schools just hold an intrasquad scrimmage as a general community night in order to generate some extra revenue and buzz ahead of the season. These schools will end up proceeding as they wish and have some Week 0 thing in place.

They probably won't but the good news is that this is meant to benefit some of those programs that are at least somewhat competitive but don't necessarily make the playoffs each year. At least those kids who put all this work in will have a shot to play in an extra game.

Some disagree but the IHSA and voters clearly are trying to have the sport be more equitable and accessible here, which is fine by me. Some programs put a lot of work in but don't see the playoffs because of the tough conference and schedules they have to play each season.

It'll be at least 2 to 3 seasons before we can actually evaluate whether or not this proposal fully worked to be honest.

And the IHSA’s method of seeding goes from something pretty meaningless to hugely important. You will have 9-0 CPS teams awarded byes. Ouch!

This is a perfect opportunity to follow the Florida modal and make the make playoffs really good by splitting them into two tiers and going to 12 classes

6A/ 6A D2
5A/ 5A D2
4A/ 4A D2
3A/ 3A D2
2A/ 2A D2
1A/ 1A D2

The top 192 teams go into the regular playoffs and the bottom 192 teams go in the D2 playoffs. Basically, you have to be 6-3 or better to be in the top tier and everyone else plays in the D2 playoffs (Florida call it the Florida Invitational) so you don't get the mismatch of a 2-7 team playing a 9-0 team. Also, this makes the brackets much more competitive and deeper similar to how it was pre 8 class playoff. The IHSA Invitational could be played at somewhere like Joliet Stadium or a another really nice high school stadium and the State Championship could stay at ISU. This is how Florida does it and response has been amazing.

there's nothing different about that, they start in round of 32, just like now.

Sweet, more rewarding mediocrity. Big picture I don't see this being earth shattering, there will just be an extra round of playoff games that are poorly attended and blow outs.

Congrats to teams like Roxana and Monticello, here's your participation trophy.

Depends on the conference/schedule. Edgy mentions it in his video take. You could see some 3 win teams winning some playoff games from the better conferences.

Exception, not the rule. Not worth adding 128 teams to the field.

In the new format 21 of the 24 CCL teams would likely qualify for the playoffs. Assuming most will win their first round game or even have a bye. How many will jump back into the Prep Bowl after a loss?

Assuming most CPS schools win their first round game?? I suppose that's one theory.

So one thing I think has made some people a fan of this is the idea that private schools would be pushed up to higher classes. But is that the case? From looking at the projected field, I didn't really notice any obvious movement. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that.

But conceptually, does it even make sense? Like, is there some reason smaller schools would be a disproportionate number of the 3 & 4 loss teams? I guess maybe they have lower playoff points, but that would probably be the same for 2 loss teams.

That was my initial thought but just a quick look and there should be some movement but nothing major because it will just be worse teams but the same class.

Absolutely agree with a lot of your points. I was more so sarcastically implying that people will wig out about this just for the sake of wigging out about change.

I hadn't thought of this, but it's pretty interesting. If you have an out of state (or any non-con) contract that was formerly week 2, and that date is now week 3 conference play (because entire calendar was shifted up) you have to cancel a contract and now reschedule. Hopefully most contracts aren't to far out.
