I'm angry where we are for the last 3 years (well more than that, but who is counting?). Like everyone else, I want answers, I want it better, I want us to not look so bad. We have been 4-8 the last 2 seasons and 4-4 so far this year. Throwing out Bethune-Cookman, these are what some of the numbers tell us. I'm just using points and record because HCSF will ultimately be judged on Wins and Losses and little else. As anything else with numbers, there may be some mistakes, I'll correct them when noticed.
So, have we gotten better? The mantra around here is that the defense sucks, the defensive staff sucks and HCSF is the god of offense. In 2019, HCSF and his offense is generating less than 1 PPG better than Riley. Less than a FG per game in our wins and 4 PPG LESS in our losses. The offense has actually regressed from its 2018 numbers.
Our defense is doing almost a TD better per game and showing progress year-to-year. In our wins, it is 1.5 ppg better and in our losses, 4.5 ppg better. Yet I get it, our defense looks and probably does lose us some important games. But I'd argue our lack of offense is just as important to blame.
Through those 3 years, our opponents have a combined record of 47-71. We have 8 P5 wins. Rutgers, Purdue, Michigan State, MN, Northwestern, and 3 x Illinois. We've beaten 4 teams that ended the year with winning records.
We have not beaten a team with more than 7 wins.
