Two out of five aint bad (Dan Gable did it twice).
Schales had two years where he stuck 4 of 5, but never all five.
Dan Hodge and Earl McCready (especially McCready) suffered from the fact that had small brackets.
McCready wrestled 2, 3, and 3 matches on the way to his 3 titles, and pinfell seven of them.
Hodge wrestled 4, 4, and 5. It was that last year that he failed to plant an opponent. The only one to escape that fate in 1957.
And as @ionel well knows by now, yes it was called a pin fall in McCready's day. And pinfall it shall ever be for me.

As for the answer to your question, you do not give a guy OW even if he had five pinfalls (John Fletcher 1948) if he also got pinfelled by a guy with five pinfalls (Bill Koll 1948) in the process.
I think you mean his sophomore year. But he only had three that tournament (all on the back side).
