says people who hoard goods and price gouge will be prosecuted. he says this only applies to commercial applications including medical equipment. the DOJ will not come after individuals who have hoarded a roomful of toilet paper

People should be free to charge market rates for their goods and services. Anything less is theft. Besides, price-gouging is the best remedy to increase supply and deter hoarders.

The disease of libertarianism, on full display.

I feel like this is the mindset that gets us to “gotta open things up and if people die, then people die.” We are allowed to have motivations that aren’t entirely driven by personal gain and I now realize that I may be in the minority here.

sarcastricks were not included **** and should have been

I did not mean for this to be political at all. I was just trying to convey the attorney general's levity in the press conference as he had a grin on his face and chuckled as he added the line about toilet paper.

.

Can you offer a rational policy alternative or only deride those that do?

"Libertarianism with ethical restrictions" Which is basically what we are as a society today. It's a free market until you start impacting the health and well being of society in general. Where political parties generally disagree is the definition of ethical vs moral vs full-on capitalism and how to regulate or manage it

One difference is long term vs short term. You can hoard TP and sell it at an outrageous price and make money in the short term, but in the long term you are a pariah.

To me, capitalism is about long term value to the shareholders. Do what is ethical in the short term and it will pay off in the long term.

Guarantee if people could charge triple for generators after a hurricane a lot more generators would make it where they are needed. Charging normal prices makes sure no one gets them.

Amazon taking these guys off charging 35 for a bottle of sanitizer is ludicrous. If it was so terrible why are people spending 35 on sanitizer

In fact, government agecies use things like the price of generators to determine where to deploy aid after a hurricane

I work in an industry and market where there is almost never balance in the marketplace. It is constantly in flux for 16 years now.
In the last month it has flipped from what it had been for about 14 months and currently, in the last week and a half, it has gone completely off the rails due to the national emergency.
The money grab is disgusting to deal with. It creates adversaries where there could be partnerships.
It turns budgets inside out and destroys corporate goals and projections.
It causes chaos in the marketplace which is bad for everyone but the service providers.

Yes yes yes, if someone will pay a price for a good or service, then that is the real cost of said good or service. That's quite textbook. In application though, that sort of approach leads to critical disruptions in markets due to some not being able to pay the money grab gouging rates.

And when everything goes back to closer to balanced, then more adversaries are created when partnerships would be better.

It's the simple idea of what is best- short term gains or long term partnerships.
Those who seek the short term gains all too often kick and scream when the roller coaster drops just as hard as it rose. Its 17ing annoying, really.

This doesnt even get into the disgusting price schemes of some pharma products where no r&d is done and prices shoot up for no justifiable reason. Insulin is a vital medication for some and while profits are needed in order to ensure supply, price gouging is shameful.

Its an Adam Smith vs Milton Friedman thing. And unfortunately, the modern brand of capitalism adheres to Friedman and that's why we have price gouging and monopolies. People need to listen to Henry Ford when he said that a business made only to make money is a weak kind of business.

That is not where we are today. We have a pretty good system in the grand scheme of things, but something like 1/4 of workers in the us have to get the blessing of government to work in their chosen profession. We have thousands upon thousands of pages of regulations.

We are not libertarianism with ethical restrictions.

So, let me get this straight, carpetbaggers are good for the economy and everybody benefits. So the poor slob that can't afford the 3x priced generator has to sit in the dark with his family until the market adjust or until the utility company gets the power back on. If you're wealthy you can buy your way around the inconveniences of the storm. I have a better idea, increase production of generators because it's the right thing to do and you still receive a fair pre-storm price for your product with the only added charge of just-in-time logistics if necessary.
