from Jerry Carinio's article regarding the recruitment of Mathis

And don't discount the Adidas connection to Mathis' AAU team, a tie that also exists with McClung.

Funny, Russ reported that someone at his AAU team wanted him at UConn and Adidas sponsors that program. I think we should discount the connection with that tidbit in hand. We have more info than Carinio, he should get a membership. This was completely our staff selling the family and recruit on a vision that included a nice set of blueprints.

I never said that it was Mathis' AAU coach.

In fact, I was never told who it was in the Team BBC organization that preferred Connecticut -- most likely because of a relationship with assistant coach Raphael Chillious.

I have a hunch who it is, but since it's purely my own speculation I'm not going to throw a name out there.

AAU coaches get free stuff from shoe companies. The kids love the free cool stuff and join the AAU team. The more prestigious the team, the higher the costs and the more kids. Then the AAU coach gets rich off promising fame and fortune to every 6th grader around.

Still doesn't explain why that would make a kid pick a certain college.

Because the coach has tremendous influence over kids at that age. I've seen it a number of times in lacrosse down here in Florida. Marginal kids can go to a place like FSU and play great club ball and pay instate tuition or go to a D2, D3 that will cost 2x,3x. I've never seen a coach push the kid to FSU. It's all about the coach being able to sell his program.
