How did they become the team they are? I mean they lost 5 of 6 guys from last year.

You’d swear they have 7 guys on the floor. They swarm every time someone gets the ball down low and somehow still recover immediately if the offense can pass it back out.

Matt Mooney and Tariq Owens were key grad transfers. Jarrett Culver exceeded even his lotto expectations, he’s probably a top 5 pick. This kid Moretti stepped into a much bigger role and the dude is an absolute baller. Kyler Edwards is a productive freshman who is playing like a junior right now. Really like this team, I’ll be rooting hard for them against Virginia if they see this one through.

I’m in. A national championship trophy in basketball may find it’s way to the high plains of west Texas. It’s not that far from Roswell. Stranger things have happened.

Chris Beard best Coach in Country by far
He seems to know what he’s doing. His team is very disciplined and they play very good defense. Let’s see if they can shut down Guy snd Jerome on Monday night. Hope so!

Most aggressive defense I've seen in a long, loooooooong time.

Flashback: 1966 Texas Western played a lot like that, but obviously we are talking about a very different era with far fewer great college players for obvious reasons. That's who this TT team brings to mind.

It’s interesting to see the types of teams who have won (will win) the national championship the last four years.

Would Texas Tech qualify as a Cinderella team? Even though they play in the big 12 they have always been a below avg power 5 basketball program. To me this ranks up there with Butler making the title game and if they win it's up there with NC State

They’re a three seed so I don’t know if it’s considered a “Cinderella Team” in the traditional sense but I find it pretty incredible since they’re a football school with no basketball success at all, really. Plus, no team in the Big 12 outside of Kansas has won a championship since 1946.

What was the program like before Bob Knight got there?
Prior to Bob Knight Tech was down. However, under Gerald Myers they were a consistent contender for the old Southwest Conference title, which really isn't saying a lot, however, Arkansas and Texas had some good teams in the conference in the early '90's. Older posters will recall that we played Tech at Rupp one season and beat them by a couple of points. Texas Tech was very good when James Dickey was coaching there and beat UNC in the NCAAT by something like 16 points before the NCAA found violations in the program.

Lubbock isn't bad if you can put up with the extreme weather conditions, dust storms, scorpions and rattlesnakes. A place that game us Buddy Holly can't be all that bad, lol.

TT defense only allowing opponents 83 points on every 100 possessions. Maybe the best defense ever.

I’m torn. My heart wants to pull for TTU but my pocket wants to pull for UVA.

I win a $500 bracket pool if UVA wins (w my “if PJ is done for the season” bracket entry) But I hate the ACC and like TTU.

Texas Tech is a bunch a hacks. A poor man’s Kansas State.
Haha, I think it was apparent who the real Big12 champs were this year. One team gets upset in the 1st round (though nobody was surprised) while the other might bring home the whole thing. Really amazing.

Good. I thought I had remembered reading this some place. Should have Known Tubby couldn’t recruit that well

Not only that but the Tubby fans on this board used TT as an example of how great Tubby was just to get them into the NCAA since they are a lower tier program. Those posters have to think the current TT is the greatest coach in history!

Beard does give Tubby credit for turning the program around.

Tubby's overall record was 46-50. He finished 19-13 in his final year. His best finish in the conference was 7th. There really wasn't a turnaround under Tubby. TT made the NCAA's once in 3 years under Tubby and had a hasty exit.

Tubby has one NCAA Tournament win since he left Kentucky. One win in 12 years. Only four trips too.

What were they before that though? I hadn’t even heard anything about their program prior besides the little circus sideshow Knight brought for a few years.

For those on here who can remember the 1966 team, I have always thought TT reminds me a whole lot of Texas Western.
