Technical Fouls

We've seen T's called on Pike, Simpson and Fernandez this year along with other players from the B1G. Does it seem like this is going on in other conferences? I can see if players say something to the refs or something really vile to the crowd but chirping has been going on for years and is part of the head game being played within the game. Discuss please.

Ticked me off that the refs called it when we had momentum, and after a critical made shot, for both Fernandes and Simpson. Takes the wind out of your sails.

Depending on the timing, something like that could change the whole tenor of the game.

Definitely...and when you see things like what happened at the end of the Southland conference games the other night, it only increases as it's stressed to refs to nip things in the bud and not let them get to that point.

Agreed and probably a good idea although I thought last nights definitely went too far

I give refs credit for realizing they screwed up and giving us a make up call. But it still hurt us, killed momentum and we can't hit free throws like they can.

Referees from CYO on up to college level get memorandums throughout the season emphasizing areas which need to be monitored and they are directed to enforce the applicable rules. I would guess the B1G wants to clean up some of the nonsense behavior during games. If the players cannot control themselves and/or the coaches cannot control the players, the referees will.

Were teams/coaches/players given any warning?

If you’re going to start calling technical fouls for things that used to be common and accepted, you should absolutely be letting teams know so they can try to adjust BEFORE getting T’d up.
It is all very clear in the rule book.

A technical foul is a warning. Get a second one and you are out of the game.
My point as expressed by @cm_13 is that if you don’t tell coaches teams and players that you will now be calling a technical for behavior that has been allowed for years, for me that is the wrong way to start “warning “ players, as that is not a warning at all, that is a technical foul.

A warning would be telling the player not to do that again or you will be T’d up. That’s a warning.

Twenty-five games into the season and you want a warning? These guys are paid professionals. Time for them to act the part. They need to concentrate on the game and refrain from mouthing off to anybody. I would think a first-round NIT loss to Hofstra would teach a lesson of humility.

They gave them a T because our bench was screaming at him to call it. He had no choice. But two wrongs don’t make a right.

I think it did have an effect. Took the wind out of RU's sails.
At least up to that point Rutgers was staying in the game. From that point forward the good ship Scarlet Knights was adrift and sinking.
Possibly the worst game I've ever seen a Rutgers team play.

What does 25 games have to do with anything? They just now started calling technical fouls for behavior that has been going on for many years.

I don’t like the behavior, never have, but if they just started calling T’s NOW, without telling anyone you would, that’s a problem.

Why haven’t players been T’d up for similar actions before?

If you want them treated differently because they are “professionals” the NFL would be a parade of 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalties.

Talking **** to your opponent has literally always been a part of basketball, pretty much at every level.

It’s the game within the game.

The captains should be told prior to the game and or the head coaches.

How about they just play the game and knock off all the horsesh*t? Love Braden Smith, makes big play after big play with no histrionics, just plays on.

Larry Bird, Jordan, Kobe ….this isn’t something new. These are legendary players who talked all game long. Cam never shut his mouth last year and he’s worse this year. Yes, some of the stuff is over the top let’s not make this like it’s something new. For whatever reason the league has decided to take it away about 1 month ago.

No one was beating Purdue the way they were shooting that night. They were unconscious

Two separate issues. I also think it's dumb that defensive players in the NFL have to do some stupid little dance every time they tackle someone for a loss even in games where they're down like 17 points. But it would also be really stupid for a ref to suddenly throw an unsportsmanlike conduct flag for that after they've been allowing to happen for years.

I argued against Simpson's technical at Maryland too, but I can at least see the argument for that one. These were so dumb that the announcers went on for a good few minutes purely about how bad the refs were. Not sure I've ever heard that happen before.

I hear you, but while Bird/Jordan/Kobe were master trash talkers they talked crap to each other and other players, and they did it quietly. Never saw them “shush” the crowd, do the “too small”, dancing, posing and all the other nonsense that goes on today.

Neither of the players who got T’d up in the Purdue game did any of those things.
