Why does the NCAA place a 4 year ban on a team transitioning to Division 1 from going to the NCAA tournament? North Alabama is in the finals against Liberty but is ineligible to make the tournament.

I am trying to figure out why the NCAA places this ban. Makes no sense to me. If a team is now playing a division 1 schedule, that should be enough so that they should be eligible to make it.

Any thoughts?

I saw a couple reasons posted on another site but the person said:

It is done for two reasons:
  1. So schools won’t move up and down divisions from year to year based on the quality of their teams but will give significant thought and care in deciding division affiliation.
  2. So players in the program meet the standards of that division and you don’t have schools transitioning to D1 that are filled with players that used the transfer to a D2 to get around the requirement to sit a year or players who went D2 out of high school because they couldn’t meet the D1 academic requirements.
