Good points, but I watched those two games and they didn't even come close to shooting well as they did against us. I think if they shot similarly against us as they shot against Cal and VCU our game against them would have been closer. It wasn't just questionable defense on our side. They shot out of their minds against us. But right now, they have what it takes to get it done. And when they get their big man back in about 4-5 weeks, watch out.
Aside from Ponds he's building his teams almost entirely through transfers. Clark, Figueroa, Heron, Dixon, Simon, and Keita all started elsewhere. He just got a LOI from another JUCO guy for next year, and they're the favorites to land Ian Steere who transferred from NC State after two days.
Shamorie Ponds is really really really good, and a surefire starting NBA guard. If his three-point shooting didn't slump last year then he'd already be in the league.
Anyone watch the end of the game? Johnnies got away with a foul at the end, fouled on 3 point shot. Fran F said it was a foul.
Out of five games, St. John's played by far their best one against us.

Loyola: 31.8%
Bowling Green: 39.1%
Rutgers: 56.0%
Cal: 38.1%
VCU: 27.3%
You tell me which one the outlier was.
Defensive points per possession:
Loyola Maryland: 0.70 (Loyola is worse than FDU and Drexel, for context)
Bowling Green: 1.04
Rutgers: 0.90
Cal: 1.18
VCU: 1.01
They needed comebacks to beat Bowling Green, Cal, and VCU. If we're worse than any of those teams, it isn't by much. I stand by my take that SJU played close to their best and we played close to our worst in our matchup.
Ponds is outstanding but they're super duper thin and Mullin still isn't a good coach. They have the ceiling to win the Big East but it's hard to see them playing consistently enough to do that although they have an edge in close games because Ponds can take over.

Only thing missing last night was the refs did not walk off early.
Their half court sets are so plain vanilla and every screen that is set (not many) appears like they are going through the motions. They spread the floor and rely on individuals making plays. They are getting by with individual offensive talent. Ultimately I am going to guess it won't get them very far.
Only BE team I've seen thus far that is Top 25 worthy----haven't seen Marquette yet but they play Kansas tonite.
Haven't seen Butler yet either and thought PC has some good young guys who will get better as the year goes on.

SJU should be pretty good. But it's hard to view a 20-point blowout at the RAC as a "quality loss" regardless of the opponent.

What's with Steere? I wouldn't count on him staying long term. He attended four different high schools in four years. He originally commit to Creighton, but decommitted during the summer. Goes to NCS for what six weeks before quitting the team and transferring out? He just doesn't seem stable.
I saw it. I think it was close. Fran sounded a little silly harping on it for as long as her did. As Rutgers fans we have seen far more egregious fouls not called on teams we are playing at the end of a game.
A family member of mine is a former SJU player and booster. He feels very detached from the program because they’ve really moved away from being NYC’s team like they were in the past. The reason they’ve been able to become relevant again is through “shady dealings”. This all started with Lance Stephenson and continued throughout the Lavin and Mullin reigns. While he still roots for SJU he yearns for the days when they were more of an up and up program.
I saw the VCU game . In addition to Ponds, Heron and Figueroa are really good. Figueroa is one helluva player.
They have been either paying players or getting them no-show jobs for many decades. A friend of mine was friendly with Billy Paultz who had a no-show job that paid well while in school.

Come on. Ponds hit him right on the arm and affected the shot. If it happened to us , we would be complaining big time. However, still nothing compared to the hose job against us at the Garden
Saw someone on Twitter confused that Ponds got both a flagrant and a technical foul and was still in the game. Apparently they dont accumulate together. Was surprised Ponds would clap in a refs' face and get a tech like that...
St. John’s will win the big east this season I have 0 doubt in my mind. Offense is the way to go in 2018. Hopefully it’s not just a loss but a good loss IYKWIM
We will have a bunch of quality losses this season. I'm not sure what the point is, other than you think we might be an NCAA bubble team?
Aside from the SJU game last night, Barclays Center has been EMPTY for all of the other games.

The Johnnies absolutely played by far their best game against RU. They have struggled in most of their other games but 5-0 is 5 and 0. They just might win the Big East. I think they do have the most talent.
Blowout yes but SJU shot 50% on 32 three pointers, 47% on 60 fgs and 75% on 16 free throws.
While RU shot 27% on 26 three pointers, 35% on 63 fgs and 56% on 25 free throws.
Bottom line is SJU shot unbelievably well and RU very poorly.
Both of these team offensive performances will happen less times than not this season.

Can’t argue with that, but our D (or lack thereof) definitely played a role in SJU’s hot shooting. We decided to take away their dribble penetration and give them room to shoot. They got comfortable and then shot the light out.
There are no sure things for 6’1 scoring guards in the NBA. Are you Cory Sanders’ agent or something?
There aren't many 6'1 scoring guards in the NBA who shot 20% from the college 3 point line.
