Can someone please give me info on the story of the South American point guard recruit from years ago? Someone was talking to me about the fake IU recruit from the Bobby Knight era, Ivan Renko, and got us talking about legendary recruitments.

Anyone remember the Canadian PG named something like Cespedes-Marie from the Tubby era, I remember getting so excited about him lol. Cant really remember the south american guy tho

Pierre-Marie Altidor Cespedes. Played at Gonzaga and Marshall and wasn’t very good at either.

Renko and Moises Globaly are two of my favorite stories but I remember reading about the Gunther Benke story with Joe B. One of those really cool what if stories along with Dirk and TMac and Ralph over the years

Did Joe B. Hall recruit Ralph Sampson? It was before my time.

The origins of the South American PG were Marc Maggard and TBK. I don’t know if it was a “wrong on purpose” thing or an actual person. I’m sure some on here know the full story.

It came down to UVA and UK.
Sampson was coming to UK.I remember seeing him in one of the documentaries. It showed him in maybe the McDonalds game in a Kentucky warm-up.(it was different back then)..Something changed from there to the announcement..maybe he didn't want to play with Bowie...We would have 3-4 more titles with Sampson on the early 80's teams..

Maggard and his frosted legions claimed it was bad information fed to him by someone else. Even though he was the bandleader on the hype he managed to dish the blame for being wrong to someone else. It’s odd though, the few times he was right he took all the credit. Funny how that worked out.

FYI there actually was a time when Kentucky actually could have gotten a star player from South America that predated Scott Rigot’s efforts by several decades.

In 1948 the US team barely beat Argentina in the Olympic Games in London. (59-57,this was the closest contest by far for the US team.) The leading scorer for Argentina was a 6-3 player by the name of Oscar Furlong who scored 18 points.

Boxscore: Argentina-United States

At the time Columbia coach Gordon Ridings predicted that Furlong would show up playing for Kentucky.

A few of years later Furlong sent a letter to Rupp asking whether it would be possible for him to transfer to Kentucky after two years at the University of Buenos Aires. Don’t know what happened after that but Furlong obviously never ended up in Lexington.

A few years later Furlong did play for Southern Methodist before returning to Argentina and playing basketball internationally. He’s in the FIBA Hall of Fame.

Oscar Furlong Wikipedia page

* Note the Wikipedia page claims that he turned down an offer to play for Rupp at Kentucky along with turning down other offers to play in the NBA. I don’t know what that’s based on. Again if anything it was the opposite as the information I’ve seen suggest he was the one who wanted to play for UK, although I don’t know the reason that didn’t happen.

I always heard it was because his Mom wanted him to stay home and go to UVA. Sure would've been something to have had him, alongside Bowie and Turpin. They would've been unstoppable.

Bowie and Sampson would have redefined the term “twin towers” especially in the time before the 3 point line.

From a message board perspective way back in the day when I was first on the boards, Darius Rice was the most talked about recruit ever.

Looking back on it...laughable.

Darius Rice and John Grice were the two we were waiting in forever and settled for Gerald Fitch and Erik Daniels and came out ahead

Would have been the most dominating front line in college history.

Link to Sampson’s Slip of the Tongue
Always good to see you here. In 1985 I saw Joe B’s last team, 16-12 upset Washington and UNLV in SLC. Before the Udub game there were a couple of locals sitting behind me disbelieving his season double double stats. I turned around and told them he was the real deal. He made me look great going for 29 and 10, and several spectacular dunks. Then we went on to lose to Mullen and St. John’s in Denver. Is that he only game UK has ever played in Colorado? Of course I was at that one to. Besides those two games in SLC, the one in Denver, how many, if any, other games UK has played in a Rocky Mountain state?

Yep Rice is the first recruitment I remember from this board . But the first I followed like a nut job was Ron Mercer's . I used to get those silly Bob Gibbons new letters in the mail and kept up ( and I was in middle school and HS ) . Hell I used to call into a 1-800 number for recruiting info back in the day . The internet sure changed the recruiting game .

This^^^ notorious thief, Matt Jones, had been stealing Maggard’s premium info. MM posted about this fake point guard from South America. Then he waited for KSR to take the bait. Sure enough Jones ran with “his sources”. It was truly hilarious.

And now Maggard is doing wedding photography or some other everyday job and Matt Jones has the largest media presence in the state.

The game where Sky Walker got his cornea scratched or they may have beaten StJohns.
Remember Walter Berry getting NPOY over Walker that year and it was a complete crock! Kenny had 2 of the hardest dunks I have ever seen in that game in back to back possessions if memory serves.

When I saw the thread title I thought it was going to be about Santiago Vescovi The 6’3 point guard from Uruguay that is blowing up as a 2020 kid and should be getting some high major offers pretty soon; Butler has offered as has Creighton and the zags have been poking around. The kid is legit and is supposedly the best prospect from South America since Ginobili.

I have binders of newspaper clippings from when I was a kid from game recaps and info. My middle/high school years were from '91-'98...so I grew up during a decent run at UK

I have a large cutout of Mercers commitment. Somewhere at the parents house :)

Who was the South American PG who played for Temple? I remember stories about Chaney giving him candy when he made good plays in practice. Dude could definitely pass the ball though. Pepe Lopez?

Vescovi joined the Tennessee team a week ago and is already a huge presence and starting at point guard.
