I think they try. They are young and still learning the game at this level. There are several possessions a game when you see a blatant missed assignment and that's inexperience.

This is Cals chickens coming home to roost. His misses and unnecessary departures have caught up with him. It isn't a reason to beat up on a bunch of young kids still learning. We treat guys like Gabriel and SKJ like vets and they have no game experience hardly.

4-5 freshman that a team could build around and true one-and done players and we got none of them. Back in the day all these players would see Senior day because all of their games are full of holes. Just because you want to be a pro doesn’t make you a pro. Can’t see a long nba career on any of our guys except for Knox or SGA and that is if they can’t clean up their weaknesses

how many times did you see players drive by Knox and him just stand there

Yep he and Washington both played poor defense and lack of hustle. PJ a 5 star from Texas playing in his home state showed little enthusiasm....Some of our 5 stars make you wonder how they were rated so high, and one thing that bothers me is not giving 100% effort....

Uneccessary departures. Well said. Totally agree.

I brought up a situation from the 80's but was told/asked to delete the thread...couldn't find a way to delete it...so just edited it...it involved players and a girl and some team conflict..

The whole team lacks fundamentals. I don't know why any pro team would waste a draft pick on Knox not for just defense but offense, too. He also just stands in the corner, not moving, waiting for someone to throw him the ball so he can shoot. He'd spend a lot of time in the D league learning basic fundamentals.

Wow, if I had to single someone out it would be PJ, not Knox.
Are you actually watching these UK games, or are you listening to the radio broadcasts?
PJ was never expected to be the teams leader, Knox is the teams best player, but totally mailed it in for a large portion of the game last night.
PJ makes mistakes, but those mistakes are not from lack of effort.
Hopefully your post was sarcasm, while odd for sarcasm, at least it would tell me you aren't totally clueless. So… .it was sarcasm… .right?

I don't think he matches up well against the smaller, quicker players he has to defend at the 3.
I agree, but his problem is effort. He's not trying to guard anyone, he's also not interested in hustling down the court the get a rebound or prevent the opponent from getting a rebound and at 6'9" he should get more than a couple of boards per game. If he even played at 80% effort he would take this team to another level all by himself.

PJ was supposed to be the effort guy, junkman of this bunch or so I thought. He has disappeared many times in games. His defense is no better than Knox's and he doesn't play hard all the time. Doesn't really rebound any better than Knox either. He's the biggest disappointment to me this year. I thought he would be the steady influence on this team. But more often than not he hasn't shown up. I thought he would be a force down low but he can't get a shot off shooting from his hip.

It's not complicated. We aren't very skilled and that has been the case the entire season. The game tonight didn't reveal anything we didn't already know. When you aren't a top 5 team, you're going to look like garbage on the road occasionally.

Let’s be honest: we’ve looked like garbage at home as well.

Losses to Florida and Tennessee, barely beat a mediocre Vandy team and let’s say it: more possible losses at home can be looming

Knox and PJ both seem to suffer from the same deficiency - lack of consistent effort. Both could be so much better if they brought it every play. Knox plays timid and appears too selective in seizing his opportunities. To me PJ has been the bigger disappointment. While 'only' 6' 7" he is huge and for his size has decent offensive skills. But he isn't up to the challenge of leadership yet and may never be. He just loafs back and forth and when something bad happens, to him or another teammate, he responds with a childish grin every time. Drives me nuts. No Fire, no desire, and palpable fear in these young players.
