I completely approve. If someone wants to be in business with you they don't balk over the last 10% of the deal. This is now a business without any loyalty or goodwill.

I can't imagine that's true. Sommerville had to already know that Washington was going to pay him 7 figures and Pike better know that's going to be a steal for any C this year.

My friend is a former SI reporter. Washington gave him 900K. Another tip Governor Murphy maybe next President of RU
That would be as silly as the hiring of Hobbs as AD. Who are the folks that are choosing the the next President of Rutgers? That would be the wrong choice for so many reasons.

There is no chance this is true. Richie released a podcast about how it went down. He would not completely make up a story as sometimes these details get out.

He asked for a million. We knew we couldn’t come close so that was it. It’s certainly possible that Washington ultimately settled on 900k though, but so what? They clearly have more money than us. He’s not even their projected starting center.

I can't believe this would be true, and if it is, we probably should move on from Pike today. While I still think it's an overpay, and $400K was my number for a back up center, you don't lose a guy from your program for $50K

There’s zero chance it’s true. If we offered 400k we had to know there would be a counter and would therefore have been ok with 450k. That’s not to say we even offered 400k in the first place but the OP’s post doesn’t make any sense at face value.

When I am in a fantasy baseball auction draft I can be in on a player at $8, but be out when the price is $9.

Maybe Pike's budget is $4,000,000 and he has that slot at 10% of his budget,
Maybe he really didn't want Somerville, but didn't want to be seen as a guy that wasn't loyal to his recruits.

He could be a troll, but I can see a scenario where this is the case.

you could?

no shot for me. the guy hired an agent and had a do not contact tag. aka go through my agent who only cares about $$$.

the agent is well aware of what guys are going for in the market. no shot he's giving that much of a hometown discount.

the only way this could be true is if the UW number is way off. If UW gave him $500K to come than I could definitely see some validity to it.

but a guy who has gone about this the way Lathan has was never and i mean never taking a 50% discount of his market value.

Offensive skills in a center come at a huge premium. It's a luxury we can't afford. It's like splurging for Ferrari and then not being able to afford gas. And giving Lathan's mediocre defense, I don't think we should be splurging to keep his offensive skillset.

Having said that, the real thing we need is continuity. That's worth spending on a little. But probably not worth competing for a center with big O skills.

Some continuity is more important at guard. I’m hoping J-Mike will announce his plan to return soon. I know I’m in the minority , but I think that’s pretty important for us. He’s the most important player to keep. We need to surround him with scorers.

Sommerville will find out Washington doesn't like to pay its bills. Just ask Mulcahy as to why he wanted back after he committed to UW. Also, UW has 3 PF/C coming in as transfers along with Sommerville. Not saying he's better off staying at Rutgers, but he should have picked a better destination.

Really? You think we offered 400k but decided 450k was too much? That makes no sense at all.
Could be offered 400k, Somerville accepted then came back later asking for more
Or Somerville asked for 400k Pike accepted , then Somerville added another 50 k to stay and Pike told him: "go west young man" if you want them apples.
Or the money being told, offered and demanded, is a bunch of BS and no one knows what Washington paid or what Rutgers offered.

Mulcahey did play under the former UW coach and AD. Last year was Sprinkles first as UW coach and the AD is new as well.

A voice of reason here.

So you honestly think Richie just flat out made up what was said on the podcast about 7 figures? Why?
