Ive seen it and the predicted and desired outcome. And it influences such free thinkers as this in the comments:
“What a surprise, the darkest part of the map is an overlay of the Red States. This is a perfect example of why we need a government to intrude in our lives.”
However the comparison is asinine. If you live in Pontotoc County, MS and travel 2 or more miles to the grocery store.. are you exposing yourself to the same as someone traveling 2 miles in New York City? Newark NJ? This map can still mirror people making only essential trips.
But lets not miss an opportunity to market divisiveness in a time like this.
Distance is a dumb metric. I can drive to my office, which is about a 7 mile drive, and see maybe 5 people and easily keep social distance while doing it. I could also drive to the grocery store less than 2 miles away, where I will see probably 100 or so people and social distancing is a little tougher.
Which of those is the riskier behavior?

I saw another map that showed color by the distace you had to travel to get to a grocery store. It looked a LOT like that one. Imagine that. The NYT is totally ignorant of what rual life is like. They don't have a dang clue. I live in town and have to travel two miles to get to one.
