includes a “conversion to a tax deductible donation to the Bulldog Club Scholarship Fund”.

Why would anyone pick that? I was under the impression the new tax law made it almost impossible to write off itemized donations like this.

Contributions are still deductible if you waive any ticket buying privileges. So by converting to a tax deductible donation, you won't get credit for that donation for your football ticket purchases this fall.

I assume the university would supply a receipt that notates that the "value of the benefit received by the donor" in exchange for the donation was actually zero rather than the artificially mandated and assumed benefit value under normal circumstances.

And that would allow you the claim both the standard deduction and this conversion as separate line items on your return?

No. You still only get the deduction if you itemize. I see now I misread your post. I jumped to the assumption you were referring to the face that most donations to athletic booster clubs aren't deductible even if you do itemize.

A better way to put it is that far fewer people benefit from itemizing now. Therefore, charitable contributions are irrelevant. For those that do still itemize, though, this option could be just as beneficial as it would have been before.
