So how good are we this year?

Good enough to be in the top half of the B1G?
Good enough to compete for the B1G title?
Good enough to make the NCAAs?
Good enough for a Top 4 seed in the NCAAs (therefore, ranked)?
Good enough to make some real noise in the NCAAs (Elite 8ish)?

I don't know all that much, but as I read various sources, I'm sure the answer to your 1st and 3rd question is "yes". Whether or not we complete for a B1G title is going to have a lot to do with Maryland and Ohio State, I think. They may - not definite, but possibly - be at a level where they are only going to lose to each other, in which case we may not be competing for the title, even if close.

How high a seed will have to be played out. On paper, elite 8 may be a stretch only because I wouldn't - as of now, certainly - pencil us in as top 10. BUT - as we know from the past, Coach Stringer can get a lot from less, and we certainly have some great talent - so I will be hoping and rooting for a deep NCAA run.

I've also been wondering how good our team will be this season. Have any pre-season polls come out yet? If so, are we ranked in any of them?

I know some people don't think much of pre-season polls but they do help to get people's attention focused on the upcoming season and it's always nice to see RU's name up there in the women's polls.

Would love a report from the open practice. I hoped to get there but wasn't able. Thanks!

I think the key is how good we shoot the three this year, if we are decent at shooting the three and don't have to face a 3-2 zone every single night I think we can be pretty dangerous especially if Rachel looks as good as CVS has said she does on offense this year.

I think the freshmen will play a pivotal role this season.

True. This has been our problem for many years. I'm glad to see the optimism here regarding this season, which I'm very much looking forward to watching.

While it remains to be seen if we're a better 3-pt team this year, it's certainly on CVS's mind. In both press conferences I've watched this pre-season, she has mentioned that the team was like last in 3pt shots made last year (and that this is not good).

3-point shooting though requires good spacing and ball movement, as well as shooters who can knock down shots. I actually thought RU often times displayed very good ball movement last year (we finished 6th in the Big 10 in APG, and 5th in FG percentage), but they led to mid range shots, not 3-pt shots.

How do we improve on this in 2015/2016:

1. Scaife needs to take more 3-pt shots. I simply don't believe someone who can consistently make jumpers from right inside the 3 pt line can't make them from right outside. If she's worked on her shot this summer, she should be a threat.

2. Get Hernandez on the floor more. Cynthia proved she could hit the 3-ball last year, and in my recollection, when she played, the team made a conscious effort to set her up for shots. The problem was that because she was often a liability defensively, she could be a net loss on the floor. If she understands the system better this year and earns more playing time, that means more chances for 3-pt shots.

3. New 3-pt shooters. The most likely culprit is Aliyah Jeune, as all reports indicate she can shoot, and shoot from deep. How quickly can she earn herself playing time. I also think Parker could surprise us. She was not shy about taking 3's last year, and while her percentage was poor, her shot overall impressed me. Will a year under her belt make her more comfortable on the floor?

4. Drive and dish. Drive and dish. A healthy Canty has proven herself more than capable of breaking down defenders and distributing. Can Sanders be that and more?

5. Rachel. If Rachel is ready to dominate this year, and CVS seems impressed with her thus far, that makes RU a more balanced offensive team--which means more openings for everyone.

We played good enough last year that if we were at literally any other location we would have been in the Sweet Sixteen at least. Just won the only other national championship that can be won in the Geno era the year before. I'm confident for this year, we have good coaching and that goes a long way.
