We need more talent. Period. This whole under-recruited crap gets you what we saw tonight. Unable to get any stops. Unable to be real threats from deep. Too easy to play against us on offense and defense.
Its just maddening.
Now that the season is over, Hobbs could have waited to now and given Pikiell 5 years rather than through end of decade. This seems like the Ash extension after Ash flirted with some small success, but is was becoming clear the talent level coming in was not good enough. An extension through 2030 is long and possbly premature. Could it be Pikiell may be at his peak? hope not, but unless talent on team takes a huge jump or pipeline to talent improves it will take a couple of years to get back to tournament. This off-season is critical for Him to bring in new blood. Can he build on his recent success, new facilities and contract? TBD. But, at least he can set expectations better next season.

He needs to get Yeboah-type grad transfers. The tournament is now won by veteran teams. This team just didn't have enough depth and talent. We thought Jones and Hyatt would give us something this year, but it didn't happen. Need to get some transfers

The transfer rules make it difficult to recruit and develop players. Top 50 freshman will get a lot of playing time, players 50+ will sit on the bench in the power conferences. Better for freshman to attend a mid-major and develop, than transfer to a power conference. Coaches that don't embrace and succeed in the transfer portal will be left in the dust.

Now that the season is over, I think it’s clear Pikiell pulled the wool over Hobbs eyes. An extension through 2030 is long and undeserving. Pikiell may be at his peak. I hope I am wrong, but just not seeing enough talent on team or pipeline to get back to tournament in near future.
3 years in a row we are a tournament quality team. 4th place in the big 10. Yes it's sucks to lose but what Pikiell has done is incredible up to this point. Now that he has the facilities and the resume, he needs to recruit big time players.

Why do we need so many threads talking about how Pike can’t recruit because it will be impossible to replace the players he recruited?
He obviously used that approach when there wasn't much to sell, but I don't get why people think it's the only option now. Sure he can still develop some kids like Reiber and Miller, but we're a much higher profile team than 6 years ago.

cant win with just 5 players, all starters and next year probably 3 are gone so that is scary going forward
Bac. Today it’s a concern. Let’s just relax see what happens enjoy the last three years see what the portal brings. Enjoy our 4-8 football ahead then we can all ***** about what we aren’t going to be in basketball. We had 3 years or fun we should all realize how much fun it was.

I didn't start the thread. If you don't think we're going to see a huge drop-off next season without a big infusion that's good on you.
Let’s see what happens. 3 years ago Ron and geo stepped up. No reason to think someone else doesn’t step up. Other teams are losing guys too and pike develops players. I understand the concern but the guys done it already in more difficult circumstances

It’s reasonable to look at it that way. On the other hand pike got us where we are with the same approach. No reason to think he will suddenly lose it either. Hang in there.

Baker was established when the Harper class came in. We have Cliff for a year..do we have him for two..who is the base...none....Jones has a lot of catching up to do. we have 3 major holes and its not like we need role players we need impact players

I understand but all of this was under pike in worse circumstances. Do we take a step back next year? Yea maybe or maybe not.

Im actually okay with a step back...I dont think RU is at the stage where we are a ncaa tourney every year. I expect a 13-18/14-17 season, the rac will be sold out based on this season but really its not going to be the same....and I am probably okay with a 2nd season not getting to the tourney as we really reload and then my expectations are that you have to get back in that tourney in 2025.

if there ever was a season to schedule poorly, its next.

Absolute BS. The last coach to build competitive teams was Gary Waters in the mid oughts. And those were old school NIT teams.

Pike is building something good. Multiple NCAA invites, solid recruiting, BIG 10 competitiveness.

I'm old. We sucked for a long time. My highlights were beating GW and St. Bonaventure. To mow down multiple B10 top25 teams? Inconceivable!

Pike and Schiano are executing Sonny Werblin's plan from the 1970s to perfection. As long as we stay the course we will get to the promised land.

How many programs have NCAA teams 4 years in a row? If we don't it's not the end of the world but no use crying and admitting defeat before we even know the roster.

You would think some would learn when they were predicting 3 win seasons to be patient before making bold declarative predictions

We should be competitive for the tourney next year. I absolutely expect pike to bring in a few portal kids who can step in right away. The minutes are there. I also expect a big improvement from our young players (Jaden, Miller, Dean, Hyatt, Mag) Oskar, I'm not sure about at this level. I think Simpson will be similar to Geo's freshman year. Develop the core and bring in a few pieces that can score, and we will be in the conversation again.

Jones and Simpson are promising plus a portal scorer and the Lafayette center and its a solid roster

I think we go back to seeing a much deeper roster. We will see Pikes versatility as a coach to go from riding starting 5 to a deep bench. Maybe we see some more pressing with a deeper rotation

Jury out on recruiting. I was ok extending him to a 5 year term from now, but not yet through end of decade.

Pike also recruited Mathis, Young, the other Omoruyi. He gets talented players. To expect a tourney team every year after 30+ years of 0 is a little crazy. He's getting us back. It may take a few years, or it may be next year, but we got a really good coach. The best we've had in over 40 years.

6 free throws over 50 minutes. Look at every box score of the NCAA so far and tell me how that makes any ******* sense

I agree the number is low, and more could have been called, but they defended our high pick and roll very well.

Flashing a double from Cliffs man on the baseline killed any look Paul might have had at the rim and the larger defender on ball killed the oop pass to Cliff.

The more I think about this game, the more I think it was just a horrendous matchup for us.

Could mean 1 of 2 things. Not enough fouls called on them, or us not drawing fouls. I say the later, although some games the disparity in fouls against us is ridiculous. This team doesn't drive enough to the basket to draw fouls. JY and Mathis were those guys last year. Too much isolation and not enough sets in my opinion.

Honestly, this year really wasnt that much fun for me. There were some great moments but lots of extremely disappointing moments as well. One problem is just making the tourney isn't the goal anymore. Its to have some success. Going out in both tournaments this year after 1 game is just a punch in
the gut. With the terrible start to the season, so much of the season just felt like blown opportunities.

Pike needs to sit down with Jones now,& let him know that he will play a big role next year.Nothing can be done if that bridge has already been burned.
