Obviously we have no clue how Logan will do this Friday, but having the week knowing you are going to start is going to help him tremendously. The offense may look the way Scott intended it to be with quicker decision making with Smothers. Quick, short routes and option plays will give Iowa some problems. We need turnovers from the defense as well!! Captain Obvious here…

And this is based on what?
The backup QB is always the best on the team, duh. Anyways, I hope OP is right, but this just seems to be a thread about bashing AM, or having some weird obsession with Smothers.

They better let him throw to WRs on islands because if I were Iowa - I'd drop at least one safety into the box and stuff the running lanes. I'd like to see them take more 1 on 1 shots just to keep defenses honest

I’m not in the know at all on this but I could see this being the case, or at least I’d hope it’s the case… they should be putting together a pretty simple/ basic game plan for Logan so he can make quicker reads similar to how 2AM was his. Freshman year… so not saying Logan makes quicker reads but I’d think the play calling should kind of put him in position to make quicker reads

I like 2AM, I wish he was able to play but I think the mental side for Logan is that he knows he’s the man on Friday is a huge deal. He’s a smart kid that knows he just needs to make the plays that are in front of him. He doesn’t need to make something out of nothing, take what they give you.

Concern #1. Decisions on quick outs and not giving up pick 6 which iowa is good at. I can live with 35 down field pick but a pick 6 and it’s game over

The coaches have commented in the past that Logan makes quick decisions. They have said a lot of good things about Adrian but I’ve never heard anyone on staff call him a quick decision maker.

What's wrong with "bashing" Martinez? He's had the starting job for four years, and led the team to zero accomplishments. I'm not saying it's okay to make it personal, but it's major college football. Sorry if it hurts his feelings but he's not good. I'm also sorry he's hurt but the fact that someone else is taking snaps on Friday makes me interested in watching this lame-duck game.

Smothers is fast but he's not as elusive as Martinez. He does seem to get the ball out quick. We may see more option and QB draws to go along with some RPO's. Hopefully a RB can help out and be a asset in the running game.

I think there's a lot of projecting going on in regards to Smothers. He may look good or he may look like a young inexperienced kid making his first start. Time will tell.

Throw it up to Manning and see what happens at least once a quarter if he has single coverage
Iowa has 21 INTs this season. Just "throw it up" against that defense is asking for trouble...... but if he does decide to chuck a rainbow downfield, then its Allen not Manning that you want to target - that guy is having an All-Big Ten year.

It's a ****** thing to do. But some people just have to be ********.

But I'm interested in seeing Smothers get his chance. He'll be under a lot of pressure thanks to an average oline.

Welp, not only the caoching staff but I saw him play his senior year in HS and plus I've been to a couple of practices this year with my uncle and he most certainly does have the fastest blinkers in the room and has the best decision making in the room as he is very deliberate at what he does. He may not have the stronest arm in the room but is more than serviceable plus he knows this offense like the back of his hand as his HS ran almost the identical offense here except different terminology. With him in there Friday, we may just see the tmpo game that Frost always wanted to run. Or we may see a similar gameplan to what we ran against Wiscy.

I don't know how many have seen his SR HS Hudl, but here it is!

I'll be surprised if Smothers can throw the ball downfield. Doesnt appear to have a Power 5 arm.

Doesn't appear based on what? It's a serious question and I'm not trying to be rude, because we are all going to find out soon and you may be right. But he hasn't played much and when he has I don't remember anything that really stood out one way or another, although he did have a nice throw on the run to Hickman in the Buffalo game.

He also had that toss against NW that was even more impressive.

I hope you're right in your assessment of him but his HS film doesn't mean anything as far as how quick of a decision maker he will be on Friday. Everyone will just have to wait to find out.

Why are so many in this thread trying to give me an inkling of hope for Friday? My hope is Smothers turns out to be a better decision maker than AM, gets a game plan he can manage, manage some long drives to keep the defense from being gassed by the 4th quarter and can avoid a turnover that results in points for iowa. Is that asking too much??

You don't teach or learn quick blinkers, either you have it or you don't and he does.

He needs to learn the plays....dude was having Martinez tell him what to do before almost every play.
I seriously doubt that. So now you are hearing conversations between the QB's? He may have talked about coverages, what he was seeing from the D, whatever, but not "what to do before almost every play". That is a ridiculous statement.

To quote Ruth from Ozark, I don't know shìt about f*ck but...I think arm strength is a bit overrated. Especially in our offense. Does our line even have to ability to give time for long routes? If he's in there lifting every day I'm sure his arm strength is just fine.

Watch the game....he was asking Martinez on almost every snap.

And your second point would hold up if MS didn't end up getting the ball handed to him afterwards.

Can't wait to see him play and see how he does, I'm not convincing myself of anything going. Hearing the quick blinker and how well he knows the offense gives me more hope and that can mask any throwing struggles he may or may not have. Seems to be better with tempo and my only fear with that is not a fear about Smothers ability but if you run tempo you risk letting Iowa control the clock and hold the ball for large amounts of time. I've wanted Smothers to get a chance and I hope he has the type of game that shows he can be the guy going forward.

We'll see. I have a feeling P defenses are a little more complicated than in HS.
He's stronger and in way better condition and has acclimated to P5 as he see's it everyday in the Blackshirts and the only ones that know the offense better than him is the staff and yes he knows the offense better than AM. Joey Ganz was the same way as even though Taylor was the stater, the only ones that knew the O better than him were Callahan and Norvell/Watson.

I think he was talking about AM / Scott conversations not AM / Smothers.

I'm really hoping you are right about his abilities. It will certainly be interesting to see.
