You're excused because Mike Riley, in his three years as Husker head coach, never signed a junior college player, in large part because he hardly tried.

"Hardly" tried Winking

He expressed concern about a junior college player's limited "clock" in the program to which he transfers. Time is of the essence for jucos, Riley said, because if a player doesn't pan out, nobody's happy.

The player might not pan out, but you should be able to tell a little bit better than a high school kid on whether or not he might pan out since he played a couple extra years in college already....

Did Eichworst ban him from recruiting Jucos or not?

Great question.

Maybe the truth will come out eventually, but probably not.

Lots of blame from coaches like Diaco saying they weren't allowed to do something, only to find out they were. S.E. might have liked to control the program, ala Barry Alvarez, only not in a good way!

No, our compliance department had way too much authority. Frost hinted at issues during his PC and this is one of them.

It's not a coincidence when a Nebraska reporter interviewed Riley last week or the week before and he said he's recruiting JUCO's.

Any thoughts on whether the issue of the compliance dept having too much authority got fixed when Moos showed up? It must have since Frost is recruiting them now.

It got fixed during the process of hiring Frost. Eichorst didn't have the political clout, or support, but it doesn't really matter to me - we're in a much better spot now.

I think the idea that a head FB coach at a University could be "banned" from recruiting JUCOs is just ridiculous. I don't know whether there were any useful JUCO targets for MR while he was here, but if there were, no one banned him from going after them.

Oh eek tim the name calling poster tough guy. Golly you’re so keen and I’m “scum.” I wish I was as tough as you, acting in the same manner Bo used to do.

I practice law. You sell death. **** you tim. The last thing I’ll ever need is your approval.

You're in a profession that attempts to get rapists, murderers and other felons free but I "sell death". RollingLaugh You had a chance a couple years ago, but chose to stalk instead, *****.

Goodness, you're rattled beyond belief.

I guess I missed the part where I pined for Pelini. You’re slipping even further Digits.
You brought up the piece of trash. But yeah, keep pretending you are not obsessed with him. Not a very bright lawyer.

Even Osborne admits Bo was a mistake, but we still have a website (and clowns here) that worship his every move. I guess they must hate Osborne....

Well not all lawyers are scumbags but this guy seems to be. He has yet to post a single substantive informative thing about Husker sports as far as I can tell.
If being a defender of a scumbag who hates Nebraska counts, then he's the best

I think nice works with mothers of HS kids...he can recruit using his aw-shucks were gonna take care of little jimmy real well. It doesn't mesh real well with inner city kids and jucos who just wanna ball. I think he lost his best recruiting leverage anytime he walked on a junior college.

JUCO players are a double-edged sword. They ended up at a JUCO for a reason. The high-risk, high-reward nature of JUCO recruits means for every star you have wowing the fans, you're going to have another who is a total bust, or worse, criminal case that brings criticism and negative attention to the program.

Most scholarship freshmen and redshirt freshmen don't see the field, so you can get about the same playing time out of a JUCO. But they have to arrive on campus ready to learn the system. That's a tall order.

I personally would try to fill needs as much as possible with prep recruits, but would hit the JUCO's for 2-5 guys every year to fill gaps. If you can get a reputation as a coach who gets JUCO players on the field, and into the NFL, recruiting would get a lot easier. In a way, it is the opposite side of the coin from walk-ons. Give everybody a fair shot. The best players play. No favorites, no free rides, no doghouses.

I wouldn't say jucos are necessarily bad dudes...Juco offers players a chance to develop and not give up their chance to play high end division I. A juco player doesn't have transfer rules to worry about so when they get that offer from their dream school they can jump at it. Many players don't come from areas where they are even noticed by d1 schools, or they are undersized, or they deal with injury issues, or have grade issues from when they are 14...if you move a lot at any point in your HS career you are doomed to have problems getting into D1... meeting clearing house requirements can be very hard for students from rural areas and areas that do not have a pipeline to major universities. There is a ton of confusion in schools about which classes even count towards NCAA entrance, and with the push to graduate kids, they are often placed in classes without notification that may not qualify for NCAA entrance credit. Kansas state has proven time and time again that you can build a winning team with jucos.

Not. It was a Riley decision period. He might have had some people whispering in his ear but the final decision was his just like everything else. if he let them make that decision that is on him.

Pelini was a complete jackass that set us back in every way. How you continue to pine for him and defend him completely baffles me.

Jackass or not he is not our problem the last 3 years.. We could have come off 3 national championships with BP and this disaster with MR was still going to happen. I'm not sure how you continue to defend MR by deflecting towards BP. Bo was the one who took our second worst chit show back to respectability only to have our worst chit show run it back down.

Nobody is defending the BP mentality and the jackass reference. He was. But he was twice the coach that MR was and got twice as much out of the players. Unfortunately too many people argue that statement because they think we are defending Bo by making that statement. On the contrary......we are just making the statement based on the facts of the coaches that he was sandwiched against before and after him. They were so bad......they made him look good in comparison.

It seems to me the ones that keep bringing up Bo and trying to use him as a diversion away from their buddy MR. They know how bad MR was but if they can beat up the other guy instead it makes them feel better. The ONLY thing you can compare between Bo and MR is their personalities which MR wins hands down. As far as coaching and getting success out of the players.......well that is Bo by a large margin.

Im not sure why you wouldn't be plugging juco's in at the weak links yearly.
This all day long. Every year you should be recruiting a little of every position. Some of those years you might miss a bit, or you could have a guy you misjudged, or they didn't pan out or they transferred. You can usually figure that out after the first year or possibly the second. Juco's are a great opportunity to fill that in. But......only if they offer the talent. At that point they can't be a project. I think that is what SF is seeing.

That's a ridiculous statement. He didn't set NU back nor did he really move them forward. I don't pine for him but he was a much better coach than what he was replaced with. Do you really think NU would not have been better than 19-19 over the last 3 years if he was still here? He hasn't been here for three years, give it a rest. The real damage was done under Riley's tenure.

It's real simple Bo was a PRI-- and a mediocre coach, Riley was a nice guy and a terrible coach, either way it screwed Nebraska. Good god not even Tennessee would talk with Bo and Riley is done as a Power 5 Head coach so best put it to rest.
Juco kids are no different than prep kids, some work out some don't. Juco route is to quickly fill glaring needs so for Nebraska that is as necessary as the walkon program. We have had some pretty good players out of Juco ranks, Newton, Terrio, Rozier, Farley, David, and many more so I think you evaluate and take a select few.

Nebraska was literally recruiting JUCO players every season before Mike Riley arrived, regardless of the coach.

Compliance rules and supervision have always been in place at Nebraska. Eichorst was also Bo's boss for a few years as well.

The common denominator was Mike Riley.

Except, Riley always recruited JUCO's at Oregon State, and attempted to his first full class at Nebraska.

I think you're smarter than this, try again...

Lots of Jucos are highly rated out of HS and guys Nebraska would have a hard time getting at that stage. As a Juco, it is easier to recruit to Nebraska, and the kid has had more time to develop. Win-win all the way around.

Wasn't Mike Rozier a Juco?

Makes sense to me that Smilin Mike would bend his will to a "compliance directive" and not recruit Jucos. He was that soft.

Or, he thought in his loser mind that building the Husker Program would be better served by staying in HS and not over-signing (weak mentality).

Oh, and develop like shite and motivate like a teen halftime show.

Mike Riley shouldn't be considered HC at Morningside College. He sucks. He epitomizes failure, at all levels.
