Should we play zone more often?

No. Unless you practice the crap out of it and have the right personnel..like Syracuse, it’s only good if you are outmanned (which we won’t be this season) or used in very short spurts as a change of pace for a possession or two. If it’s not your primary defense it leaves too many holes and opportunities for offensive rebounds.

What I would love to see us do is press a few possession a game and then fall back into a zone with a reduced shot clock

Mostly, as a means to when a team starts to get into some rhythm, to prevent them from getting int a roll ..and
Then knock them back out of whack when we return to man to man

I like this as a change of pace to break rhythm if a team starts getting comfortable

Not usually - but OSU really doesn’t shoot well so maybe against them it would’ve worked before the bigs picked up 4th fouls and couldn’t defend.

Man-to man defense is what has made Rutgers into a formidable defensive team. Don't change what isn't broken.

If teams can't defend without fouling, then a zone defense should be tried.Rutgers had no defense for the last 10 minutes of the Ohio State game.Sometimes zone might be needed to stop a team with outstanding 3 point shooters and or dribble drives to the basket.Rutgers was leading by 16 points and loss the game by 12 points .Injuries happen and adjustments must be made when players get in foul trouble and the man to man defense isn't working.

No- kids don’t grow up playing much zone. It’s a lot of teaching time and the practice time limits make it very difficult. Just about everyone using man as the base defense with wrinkles here or there based on the situation.

Would it cut down on number of fouls called on our bigs?
Interesting. I called for zone in the game thread when Myles got his 4th foul. Pike did utilize the zone after it was too late and Myles fouled out on 3 criminal calls by Bo. I thought if Pike had gone to the zone earlier it may have kept OSU from exploited Doucore.

What is our best defense? Without a doubt man to man. But those POS officials put Pike in a terrible situation. IMO, he should have gone zone much earlier and at the same time forced Harper and Geo to dribble drive instead of settle for outside shots, which they missed at a terrible rate.

That would have been the time give it a try or double the post to protect the bigs... especially since OSU doesn't shoot the 3 well

Yeah...definitely could have run some packline D at OSU where doubling the post is a requirement. But, the rest of the BIG shoots it too well from 3 to go away from mostly man to man...
