Should targeting rules be changed? If so how?

I don't know that I'd change what constitutes targeting but I would change three things.

1) No ejection for first violation.
2) Ejection for second offense but no automatic carryover to next game for 2nd half call.
3) League review of video to ID egregious behavior and possible additional suspension if warranted.

To me it is far too subjective and game changing to kick a player out of the game on first offense.

I agree with your third point but... here's what else I would do:

Borrowing from Soccer-style Red Card and Yellow Card fouls.

Red Card targeting: automatic ejection.
Two Yellow Cards in a game: ejection.

At the same time, I'd like to be a bit harsher: I'd carry over punishment to the next game for a half-- no matter which half the ejection occurs.

I hate the crown of the helmet stipulation. If it’s forcible contact to the head, that is targeting. If you contact someone’s chest with your crown, that should not be targeting

I'd make a few

Leading with the crown of the helmet to any part of the body that is not the head is a personal foul 15 yard penalty. Basically spearing. This would be pretty easy.

Forceable (or whatever they call it) contact to the head of the person in possession of the ball and not defenseless is a personal foul 15 yard penalty.

Forceable contact to the head of defenseless ball carrier or defenseless person in the process of making a catch is a 15 yard penalty and an ejection.

Intentional contact to the head of a player not in possession of the ball is a 15 yard penalty, an ejection, and suspension from the next game.

They just need to make it targeting 1 and targeting 2 like the flagrant foul rules in the NBA or the red card yellow card example used above. Call it a day there.

I want to see the blind side block penalty eliminated. The one that was called last night was pathetic. That used to be called football. Learn to keep your head on a swivel.

i'm not for ejections at all. Unless a player is throwing haymakers or calling the refs pig17ers, they shouldn't be tossed.

The problem with that is, that's a good way to break your own neck, which is exactly the type of injury the rule was put in place to avoid.

Go back to a single bar on facemasks. That would definitely make me a lot more careful on how I hit someone.

I agree with this. Have a designation for intentional and unintentional. 15 yard penalty but disqualification should only be for intentional hits. Make it 30 minutes of clock time that way of you intentionally did it in the closing minutes of game there is still a punishment to carry over to the next. So if you did it with for minutes left. You would be eligible to enter the next game with 4 minutes left in the first half.

This is the best solution. We saw cases for both in the playoffs. Have two tiers of targeting. One for non malicious intent like the one last night and the one in the Ohio State-Clemson game. And another one that has clear intent that is an immediate ejection, like the one in the Oklahoma- LSU game.

The penalty has its placement. If you're out there head hunting 30 yards from the play, that's dirty.

The one last night should be eliminated. Not sure how.

How do you know someone's intent?
