Shot clock needed for high school

I think it's time for a shot clock in high school. Too many games in which the winning team doesn't score 50 points. Also there are too many turn overs in high school basketball. The more a team holds ball, the greater the chance for a turnover. At least when ball is shot, there's a chance it will go in.

There was a 7 overtime game Saturday (Staunton River vs Liberty Bedford). I believe final score was 49-47. When I heard game was 7 OTs I expected a 101-100 score, or something like that.

Did not see the Liberty/Staunton River game, however, if that game is anything like the ones I have seen this year the scoring, or lack thereof, has a lot more to do with an inability to shoot and/or execute anything resembling an offense than it does with any need for a shot clock. It is truly amazing how the quality of play in basketball continues to decline. The teams I have seen this year that were supposed to be good would not even pass as good rec league teams in earlier times.

I agree on the decline of basketball. But I think a shot clock would help. It would force teams to become more offensive minded and look for shot quicker. Some coaches now try to call every play from sideline.

Shot clock wouldn't help, defensive minded coaches would be able to force even worse shot selection than you have now.

Problem now is teams waste time trying to "get ball inside", eventually turning ball over or taking a bad shot, anyway. Bring ball down court and shoot it.

It is not surprising there is not a shot clock given the time, expense and enforcement complications. Also, the VHSL has much more pressing problems to address such as teams huddling at center court or dunking during pregame warmups at the state tournament. The VHSL continues to look to create problems where none have historically existed.

Shot clock in NCAA basketball resulted in UVA scoring 41 points in 40 minutes of action against UNC. Wow the biggest problem is the players can't shoot a lick. Maybe taking the dunk away would help an average kid learn to shoot.

I think low scoring games are the result of too many teams running deliberate half court offenses. thus draining shot clock, then having to rush their shot.

Oh so true!!!! I watch this when players are warming up. Trying to dunk the Ball when many can't even hit a layup consistently.

Last night Dan River Gate City 96-84 I believe. Richlands beat Chatham 40 something to something. One Gate City player scored 64 points.

And the team that scored 96 ran a half court offense many times while they had the ball, yea they had their share of fast breaks but they also ran a half court set as well as any teams I have seen in a while. Game doesn't need a shot clock it needs fundamentals and cut out the crap they see on tv.

And the Richlands/Chatham was ugly with Chatham getting somewhere around 25 fouls against them, not sure that Richland ever got enough against them to allow Chatham to make it to a one and one.
