It's probably "technically" true.
My guess is that Ole Miss finally decided to grant his release, submitted that decision to the NCAA NLI office and then leaked that info to Evan Daniels who Tweeted that Smith got his release.
Smith needs the actual release document from the NLI office so that he can prove to schools that he is officially recruitable and is available to take visits etc
So what’s your take on him Russ? Would he have any interest in Rutgers and vice-versa ?
Would he be a good fit and would it help in getting Strickland?
I've liked Serrel Smith since I first saw him in December of his freshman season. At that point he wasn't asked to score much, didn't have much of a perimeter game but he would devastate you in the mid-range and he was a good facilitator.
Since then he's become a ball-dominant guard who can score from deep or taje his man off the bounce.
When he committed to Ole Miss he didn't have many HM programs pushing for him IIRC. I think he chose them over Dayton, USF and one other school that I can't remember.
This time around I'm expecting schools with bigger basketball brands to come a-calling so I think it may be difficult, but not impossible, for Rutgers to get involved.
I don't think getting Strickland would help get Smith or vice versa.
