What Division 1 CFB head coach most closely resembles Matt Rhule? We can include former coaches... you know, guys like Woody Hayes, Frank Solich, Gary Moeller, Bobby Bowden, etc.

I'm going with Mike Riley. A sense of false toughness but just a nice guy, smooth talker of circles, knows everyone, always seems to find a job, 500 records are A-OK, and seems clueless that he sucks.

Matt Rhule's mindset as a man fits our state and what it stands for. His style of football does not fit. He has two years to figure out something that works before he can be affordable to terminate from employment. He still has time to find fit here, but his track record with asst. coaches, the landscape of college football, etc has made the mountain much steeper than it was in 2023.

I don't know Rhule personally to say what kinda person he is. But those who do know him say he is exactly what you said "a tough Philly guy".

I hear ya brutal. I wish sometimes he would just talk less about what you THINK u know about a team and let it play out. We have one of the most rabid fan bases in college football. They will turn on you at the blink of an eye when they feel mislead. I think I'm a bit different than average Joe fan fan because I NEVER take what these coaches say as the gospel. More times than not Matt is IMO trying to be positive through the media for his players confidence. So when he says we are gonna be "hell on wheels " on the DL for example that was for his PLAYERS and their confidence IMO. INSTEAD the fans took it and ran with it and as soon as the predictable DL struggles appeared he was right in the cross hairs.

Again that's just one example but like you said there are plenty others. Unless you are a Nebraskan (Scott Frost) you are gonna get a short rope. It is what it is. These coaches come in and they know the history. They know what fans wanna hear and they give em that. The moment it doesn't look like they said LOOK OUT lol.

Rhule is in that situation now. Benefit ofnthe doubt is gone. Cant talk your way into anything now. Best thing he can do is talk less, grind more and win some games. I think the AD probably bought him a couole years but if nothing much changes its probably a wrap for him.

Glen Mason of Minnesota Gopher and Kansas Jayhawk fame. Won games at some tough to win places. Liked to talk. Not known as a great coach but certainly pretty good.

I agree with you on this. I think alot of what Rhule says is for the players. Id like to hear him say something like were getting better but were not where we want to be as a message to the players instead of were going to be hell on wheels which in this case was clearly false confidence and most likely gave the d line guys false confidence. That also adds pressure on those guys to live up to that claim. If they can do that then great. But if they cant like this year that feels like failure rather then incremental growth.

I've listened to EVERY word he's said. I just don't take everything coaches say as the gospel like most fans do. I understand SOME TIMES coaches talk to there team through the media. Sometimes they talk to there coaches through the media and sometimes they are talking to the fan base through the media.

They generally don't tell you who they are talking to. As fans we don't do a good job of deciphering who they are talking to. Not our problem to begin with though. As a fan I would say don't put it out there for me to decipher because by not telling me it's on you (the coach).

Anyways he's gotta do better talking "up" his teams. He's gonna be held accountable for that. ESPECIALLY now all things considered. Another example was him bragging about having the NIL money now to go get who you want. Guess what? Now fans are gonna hold his feet to the fire if he doesn't get some dudes in the portal. It's like backing yourself unnecessarily in a corner. Would think he'd know better but apparently not enough to not keep doing it.

I don't care for him, but the guy has been a regular on McAfee and nationally, people still remember what he did at Baylor and Temple. Not turning around the **** shows at Carolina and Nebraska don't mean as much as the Corn dwellers on here think it would. It ain't like the guy took over the Showtime Lakers.

Naw I strongly disagree. Mike Riley never pretended who he was. Matt Rhule is something else a pretender but more like Mike Riley than he would like to admit.

I'll give a random thought. MR closed practice so guys could "perform" without pressure, at least in 2023 that happened. I've thought about this the past few years. Isn't this the wrong mindset. I don't want a player who performs great in secret practices. I want a guy who will perform in front of 90,000 fans or even better performs in front of people who are booing him. Just something i've thought about for the past few months. So instead I would put all his family, and people he cares about to watch him. If they don't perform perhaps it's not the right player.
