- outrebounded the other team
- attempted more foul shots than the other team
- scored more total points than the other team

Note the NU had both fewer foul shot attempts and fewer rebounds in every single February loss. (I didn't look at January.)

Those stats are driven both by fundamentals (moving your feet on defense, boxing out) and attitude (cut quick and draw those fouls, beat the other guy to 50/50 balls).

I feel like it has been started with their play on the defensive end. Whenever Collins' teams have played well over the years, this seems to be the calling card.

The other thing to note is that Minnesota (in part due to reduced roster) and Maryland did not have the physical presence inside most B1G teams have. Foul calls tend to favor the team that can physically dominate in the paint.

One other key to their two wins was shutting down the other team's best player. Ayala came into last night's game their leading scorer at 15 a game and when I've seen Maryland play and win, he has been a great penetrator. Didn't happen last night. And the same thing happened with Minnesota's Carr. I agree, we need to be stronger inside. Hopefully, Nicholson can add to the rotation next year.
