Scoring offense - Mullen / Moorhead / Leach

Disclaimer - these numbers include D/ST touchdowns, which I would reasonably expect to increase all across the board by about the same amount, so I’d expect them to be negligible from a comparison standpoint. If someone wants to tweak the numbers to reflect this more accurately and take all those out, feel free to do so.

The following are the points per game we have scored against Power 5 and SEC competition from 2017 to 2021. The Power 5 numbers include BYU and Louisville for 2017 / 2019, KSU for 2018 / 2019, Iowa for 2018, and NC State in 2021.

2017 (Mullen Year 9) - 27.6 points per game
2018 (Moorhead Year 1) - 20.5 points per game
2019 (Moorhead Year 2) - 23.6 points per game
2020 (Leach Year 1) - 20.7 points per game
2021 (Leach Year 2) - 24.5 points per game

At first glance, looks like Leach is just more of the same as Moorhead. But lets take a closer look at just the Will Rogers era, the 7 games of Vandy 2020 through yesterday (excluding Tulsa / La Tech / Memphis)

2020-2021 Will Rogers first 7 SEC / P5 starts - 26 points per game

So, through all the mistakes and miscues of the entire Will Rogers era, him learning how to play SEC football as a true freshmen, every key player on offense being a freshmen or sophomore learning on the fly, and all the mistakes that have come along with that, we are still only 1.6 points per game off where we were with Mullen in year 9, and we’re scoring almost a TD per game more than we did with a 5th year senior Nick Fitzgerald running the show in 2019 under Moorhead.

To be fair, that 7 game subset doesn’t include any games yet against Bama, Auburn, or Texas A&M, which are 3 of the better defensive teams we play every year. So this isn’t the end all be all yet….it still could go south as we move further along. But hopefully it adds some perspective that things aren’t nearly as bad as they sometimes seem.

Things arent as bad and if people can't see that we have improved each week then they are blind. We are right there from turning the curve. Just stay the course and keep getting better. All these chumps calling for the fire of leach are going to be begging him to stay in a short time. We ran the ball better, we are blocking better, penalties are way down. If the defense plays ball we would've won that game. We are going bowling this year. We will beat Texas AM this week and then 1 of auburn, arky, kentucky, ole piss, of not more than 1.

Clemson scored 14 in regulation vs NC State.

That certainly left a mark.

They have also scored 3 and 14 pts against their other FBS opponents this year. And they are ranked 121st in offense this year.

The "mark" I want is wins. So far in the Leach era we've beaten a terrible 5-5 LSU team, Vandy, Mizzou, and mighty Tulsa last year and this year a 2-2 La Tech team and a yet to be determined NC St team.

The other 9 we've played in past 2 years outscored us.

We haven’t been out of any game this year until the final seconds. You only get to count points scored when you’re tied or leading? What kind of nonsense is that?
